Please Evaluate - IT to Product Management/Strategy [#permalink] New post 13 Oct 2010, 05:28
Hi All,

Here's a brief about my profile.

Acads: BE Electronics & Communication - 2.9 GPA :(

Work Ex: IT - will be 6 Years by the time of application (Combination of software development(3 Yrs + Team leading roles(3Yrs)) in pensions & Benefits domain(Renowned Organizations)

GMAT: Not appeared yet, targeting 720+

Nationality: Indian, 28 years.

Professional Achievements: Recieved a number of awards including some major ones for some excellent work.

Extracurriculars: Decent - Both in school and college, won a number of awards in technical competions and festivals.

Volunteer/Social work - Not much - Part of a group at office working with an NGO that works for poor families and children enabling them to acquire skills to become self sustaining(1 Year)

Its apparent that I will be among very competitive bunch of applicants having common profile like mine.(Indian + IT)

Also, my concern is my GPA, which is on the lower side and age as well..

Nevertheless, I would still like to be hopeful and try to get into a decent B School. I know essays would be a very important factor for that.
Please suggest some competitive B schools for me. I am concentrating on Product management/ Strategy profile after completion.

Thanks a lot.

I wouldn't worry too much about your UGPA, because there's really nothing you can do about it. If you have time, you can try building up an alternative transcript, but if you're gearing to apply this year, you won't have time for that. So just do your best on the essays, and turn in a great application. Speaking of management or strategy, most top b-schools have a great track record of educating students in these fields, including sending them off to great internships and full-time jobs. You're right that you will be competing in a very tough field, but that's just how this game works. All you can do is do your due dilligence and do the best you can. My suggestion of schools would be USC, UCLA, Darden, Ross, Fuqua, CMU, and Johnson. CMU is more forgiving of UGPA (I think the lower end of the spectrum is 2.8) and UCLA has an unbelievably high average GPA (I think 3.5?). Anyway, look into those and see if you can determine which one has what you're looking for in terms of culture, fit, and employment prospect.
