Entering General Electric Aviation's Information Technology Leadership Program starting next week. It is the number one ranked leadership program in the world and consists of four six month rotations in various leadership positions in IT and three months of training, including a four week bootcamp in Michigan and three week bootcamp in China. My first rotation will be as the IT lead for managing the transition of 1,400 locations from a legacy network to a next generation network. This includes project management, resource management of a global team and technology management. Future rotations will include similar assignments and possibly an international assignment. Following completion of the two year program I will get to pick my next assignment in a leadership position in IT.

The five part-time programs I am interested in are:
- Chicago Booth weekend and evening
- Northwestern Kellogg weekend and evening
- University of Michigan Ross part-time
- Carnegie Mellon Tepper part-time
- Duke University Fuqua Cross Continent part-time MBA

Also, assume that I will be able to relocate close to these schools while attending, or possibly travel to weekend programs.

Thanks again!

Hi Tudorjon,
This is a very impressive background. GE is an excellent company, well-known for its grooming of top executives. You are truly off to a wonderful start. You have all the credentials of a very solid candidate to any of the elite programs. Your GMAT score is a little on the softer side, but you've only taken it once, and if you feel you can increase the score into the 700 range with little effort, I'd suggest you re-take it, just as a way to give yourself some cushion. If you want to read more about how to think about GMAT, check out an article I wrote recently:

Of the schools you listed, my advice is to select the one that is ranked the highest for your particular interests b/c with your background, I have confidence you'll be admitted. Overall, Chicago and Kellogg are considered the top of the heap when it comes to part-time or exec MBA programs, but if you have a specific interest where one of the other schools has a stronger program, that would be the only reason I'd suggest to look at them. Bear in mind, Chicago and Kellogg are pretty different. Chicago is more oriented toward finance & accounting, while Kellogg is more gen mgmt and marketing. Both are tremendous part-time programs, and I think your shot into either is going to be solid. Plus, they are both close to the Cincinnati area, which means you could do the drive easily. I grew up in Cincinnati and went to college in Chicago. It's about 5 hours at an easy drive. Whatever you decide, as long as you don't get in your own way and you keep your nose clean, I believe you'd be a strong admit to a part-time or exec program.

Hope that's helpful,

Thanks for the positive and insightful reply James! I very much appreciate it, and it greatly helps my confidence. I'm most interested in Kellogg and Booth out of all five programs but they also appear to be the toughest to get into, so I wanted to get some outside opinions about my chances. My girlfriend's family is from Chicago so I have spent a couple months in the city and visited and researched both schools. I am still unsure as to which would be a better fit, as I value traits from both schools. Kellogg's general management emphasis and team work attitude match well with my leadership style, which focuses on open decision making and self analysis through emotional intelligence principles. Booth's focus on analytic thinking appeals to me because my field, information systems, is highly analytic. Over the next few years I hope to better understand my passions as I gain more work experience.

Based on your advice and the advice from your article I will plan to take the GMAT a second time in a year or two. I think I need to spend more time getting used to timing on the quantitative section as I ended up just picking random answers for the last eight problems. Baring that, I believe my overall score would have likely been able to reach 700. I scored in the 90th percentile in the verbal section on my preliminary practice exam and finished the section 15 minuets early when I took the real exam so I feel that I can easily maintain it in the future allowing me to focus just on quantitative.

Also, I real like the information and articles provided on your website. They are very useful. Thanks again!
