please help me in understanding how this question can be sol [#permalink] New post 17 Feb 2013, 02:17
THis is a question from Mgmat cat

The Marsden family is traveling through Europe on vacation and has two days to spend in Barcelona. While planning the daily activities, each family member has fairly strong preferences. Little brother asked to go to the beach at least one of the days, but cannot walk for more than 4 hours during a day. Mom loves shopping for local crafts so requested shopping activities on both days. Big sister will get credit for school so she must visit at least 4 art or architectural sites during the family’s visit, but Dad said he could not stand to visit more than one art exhibit on a single day. The family has 12 hours each day to devote to activities, and they have already decided on the following.

Day 1:
Park Güell (Art Exhibit, Bicycle, 3 hours)
Catalunya en Miniatura (Entertainment, Walking, 1 hour)
Olympic Stadium (Sightseeing, Bicycle Tour, 4 hours)
Las Ramblas (Shopping, Bus Tour, 3 hours)

Day 2:
La Segrada Familia (Architecture, Walking, 3 hours)
Barri Gotico (Shopping, Bicycle Tour, 2 hours)
Aeri del Port (Sightseeing, Cable Car, 4 hours)
Nova Icària (Beach, Walking, 1 hour)

Select an activity that can be added to the schedule for the first day. Then select an activity that could be added to the schedule for the second day. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Additional Day 1 Additional Day 2 Activity
Mirador De Colon (Architecture, Walking, 1 hour)
Poble Espanyol (Shopping, Walking 2 hours)
Montserrat (Sightseeing, Bus Tour, 1 hours)
Museu Picasso (Art Museum, Walking, 2 hours)
Mar Bella (Ocean, Boat Outing, 4 hours)
La Pedrera (Art Museum, Walking, 1 hours)

Hello,

Are you sure that this question is legit and picked directly from MGMAT CAT? Somehow the constraints and the answer options don't fit together well.

The first day the family is left with an option of going to visit some architecture that might or might not involve 1 hour of walk(since 3 hours of walk is already completed). The second day the family can visit an art center or art museum that involves no walking as 4 hours of walking has already been completed(architecture and beach). They need to complete both activities since sister needs at least 4 hours of art/architecture visit and only by visiting these sites will they be able to accomplish that goal(they have already charted out the plan for one art museum and one visit to a piece of architecture). On the first day they can visit an architectural site with a one hour walk ( Mirador De Colon (Architecture, Walking, 1 hour)). However, there is no option that involves a visit to an art museum without walking.

It would be great if you could reconfirm the question.

our constraints are:
Mom shopping: 1 or both days
Lil Bro cant walk more than 4 hrs any day + must go to BEACH either 1 or both days
big Sis to visit 4 arch sites but Dad cant stand more than 1 art exhibit a day
DAY 1

Park Güell (Art Exhibit, Bicycle, 3 hours)
Catalunya en Miniatura (Entertainment, Walking, 1 hour)
Olympic Stadium (Sightseeing, Bicycle Tour, 4 hours)
Las Ramblas (Shopping, Bus Tour, 3 hours)

we have 1 extra hour to spend
what more can we accomodate? can WALK for 3 hrs
or we CANT accomodate - No more ART EXHIBIT, No more SHOPPING

of the choices,
Mirador De Colon (Architecture, Walking, 1 hour) - oUT NO WALKING
Poble Espanyol (Shopping, Walking 2 hours) - oUT NO WALKING
Montserrat (Sightseeing, Bus Tour, 1 hours) - WINS
Museu Picasso (Art Museum, Walking, 2 hours) - OUT NO WALKING
Mar Bella (Ocean, Boat Outing, 4 hours) - OUT only have 1 more hour to spend for the day
La Pedrera (Art Museum, Walking, 1 hours) -OUT NO WALKING

Hence Montserrat for Day 1.

For DAy 2:
LaSegrada Familia (Architecture, Walking, 3 hours)
Barri Gotico (Shopping, Bicycle Tour, 2 hours)
Aeri del Port (Sightseeing, Cable Car, 4 hours)
Nova Icària (Beach, Walking, 1 hour)

We have 2 extra hours to spend.
what we CAN accomodate: ART EXHIBIT
What we CANNOT accomodate: NO MORE WALKING, NO SHOPPING

Of the answer choices:
Mirador De Colon (Architecture, Walking, 1 hour) - OUT for walking
Poble Espanyol (Shopping, Walking 2 hours) -OUT for walking
Montserrat (Sightseeing, Bus Tour, 1 hours) ONLY OPTION that remains GOOD
Museu Picasso (Art Museum, Walking, 2 hours) -OUT for walking
Mar Bella (Ocean, Boat Outing, 4 hours) - OUT for no of hours available to spend
La Pedrera (Art Museum, Walking, 1 hours) - OUT for walking

For day 2 also we have only Montserrat left. however it only uses 1 hour out of 2 available. not the best answer choice but only one that stays valid after all eliminations.

Hi,

first to analyze the given data

Day 1:
Park Güell (Art Exhibit, Bicycle, 3 hours)
Catalunya en Miniatura (Entertainment, Walking, 1 hour)
Olympic Stadium (Sightseeing, Bicycle Tour, 4 hours)
Las Ramblas (Shopping, Bus Tour, 3 hours)

Activities schedules are for 11 hrs(3+1+4+3) so we cannot select a >1 hr activity
Also the activities scheduled already have walking for 1 hrs (Catalunya en Miniatura ) so activities selected can have at most 3 hrs walking
shopping activity required by mom has already been done.
Already involves a Art Exhibit visit so cannot have any art musuem visit

evaluating available options:
Mirador De Colon (Architecture, Walking, 1 hour)
Poble Espanyol (Shopping, Walking 2 hours) : >1 hr activity
Montserrat (Sightseeing, Bus Tour, 1 hours)
Museu Picasso (Art Museum, Walking, 2 hours) : >1 hr activity
Mar Bella (Ocean, Boat Outing, 4 hours) : >1 hr activity
La Pedrera (Art Museum, Walking, 1 hours) : 1 art exhibit activity already done on the day

Available options for Day 1
Mirador De Colon (Architecture, Walking, 1 hour)
Montserrat (Sightseeing, Bus Tour, 1 hours)

Day 2:
La Segrada Familia (Architecture, Walking, 3 hours)
Barri Gotico (Shopping, Bicycle Tour, 2 hours)
Aeri del Port (Sightseeing, Cable Car, 4 hours)
Nova Icària (Beach, Walking, 1 hour)

Activities schedules are for 10 hrs(3+2+4+1) so we cannot select any activity >2 hr
Also the activities scheduled already have walking for 4 hrs (La Segrada Familia and Nova Icària) so we cannot have any activity that involves walking
shopping activity required by mom has already been done .
The visit to Beach is scheduled so little brother's stipulation for beach visit on atleast one day is met.

evaluating available options:

Mirador De Colon (Architecture, Walking, 1 hour) : requires walking
Poble Espanyol (Shopping, Walking 2 hours) : requires walking

Montserrat (Sightseeing, Bus Tour, 1 hours)
Museu Picasso (Art Museum, Walking, 2 hours) : requires walking
Mar Bella (Ocean, Boat Outing, 4 hours) : >2 hr activity
La Pedrera (Art Museum, Walking, 1 hours) : requires walking

So for day 2 only available activity is :
Montserrat (Sightseeing, Bus Tour, 1 hours)

Coming back to Day 1 available options
Mirador De Colon (Architecture, Walking, 1 hour)
Montserrat (Sightseeing, Bus Tour, 1 hours) :Day 2 Activity

Hence
Day 1 activity is Mirador De Colon
and Day 2 activity is Montserrat

This was the logical conclusion i came up with but only problem is that With this answer only 3 art or Architecture visits are made not the 4 art or Architecture visits

Also the 4 art or Architecture visits cannot be achieved with given data as:
for Day1 art exhibit is already scheduled so we can have only architecture visits
for day 2 architecture visit is already scheduled and the listed art museum options both involve walking whereas the scheduled activities for day 2 already involve 4 hrs of walking so given the constraint that little brother cannot walk for at max 4 hrs we cannot select art museum visit for Day2

Kudos if you find the post helpful
