Please help - stuck at verbal [#permalink] New post 04 May 2012, 01:26
Hi,

i took my gmat and scored 30 V and 45 in quant - 620

I wanna retake gmat by june end, my questions are

1) Is it feasible to increase verbal from 30 to 37/38 in 2 months
2) suggest me resources - i have registered for e-gmat.com, suggest me if anything more is required

These days when i start studying i feel i am not gaining anything out of books, and i feel my skills for verbal are not increasing in spite of giving time to verbal.

In terms of areas within verbal - i am good with SC, decent with CR , but very bad at RC

Please help

What resources did you use for your first attempt? How long did you study? Did you practice with the OG and GMATPrep? Please provide us with the details of your previous preparation.

What resources did you use for your first attempt? ---- I used MGMAT guides, OG and Kaplan QBanks

How long did you study? - 2.5 months ( 45 days with focus and 30 days without too much focus)

Did you practice with the OG and GMATPrep? --- yes i did, my OG accuracy with quant was almost 90% and with verbal it was 60%

I really need to improve my verbal :( especially CR and RC

Math is clearly your strong point, so the trick there is to sustain your current level. In other words, the majority of your time and effort will need to be spent on verbal. For math, look into the GMATClub tests and keep an error log.

Verbal needs some work, so reread Manhattan SC and Manhattan CR. Those topics - particularly SC - need to be read over and over again for the concepts to be fully absorbed. Also, see these links:

critical-reasoning-question-directory-topic-and-difficulty-128861.html

sentence-correction-question-directory-topic-and-difficulty-129750.html

Start with the 500-level questions and work your way up. Become an active member on the verbal forums. That means answering questions and fully explaining your answer.

For RC, I feel that the best approach is practice. And for tough RC passages, look into the LSAT.

I'm not sure how much time you have taken off from the GMAT since your first attempt, but try to take a break for two weeks or so. You studied for a long time and probably need a break.

You simply can't afford 30 days of inadequate preparation. Commitment is the most important part of your preparation. This is hard, I know. But if your goals are worth it, then you will find a way to do what it takes to reach those goals.

It might be worth taking a step back to make sure you've really mastered the fundamental verbal concepts tested on the GMAT. This will make tackling more difficult verbal questions much easier. See if Manhattan GMAT's Foundations of GMAT Verbal book sounds right for you:
