Dear ThinkISB,
I got a call for the Interview at Delhi on the 9th. I need to know that now that I have been shortlisted for the IV(despite a very low GMAT score,640), how much weight will it now carry for the final admission?

Dear agourav,

Congratulations on your call. Once your profile is through, it is through. The interview is a means to check whether the candidate is actually the one depicted in the application. So, forget about your low GMAT score and concentrate on the interview.

All the best!!!

ThinkISB.

Dear hitman4683v1,

The steps that you have described are excellent ones indeed to beef up your profile. I would also like to point out that you have done a fair enough evaluation of your own profile and know what the gaps are. Right now it lacks some very important aspects (client interaction, system perspective) and that makes the work experience weak. But the fact that you want to go into financial analysis is something you can fall back on. So, in fact too much experience of telecom will not be a direct plus. This is something you can say to justify your lack of adequate experience.

As for the GMAT score, you HAVE to get 700+. I would suggest 720 - 740 to be a safe score because of 2 factors:
1. Lack of experience.
2. Financial engineering type of roles ask for excellent analytical skills.

ThinkISB.

Dear ThinkISB

Thanks for the reply. What kind of answers do the IV panel expect. Also, of u cud throw some light on the ratio of number of IV invites to the number of seats available.

Dear agourav,

Just be very sure of everything you have written about yourself. The interview panel is very adept at sifting out the fake experiences if any.

The ratio has traditionally been 1:5.

Re: Please join me in welcoming ThinkISB to GMAT Club [#permalink]
Dear ThinkISB,
Thanks for the kind gesture. I would like to have your opinion on my profile for ISB for fall 2011.

I have already taken GMAT twice(580,650) in 2009 and i am not satisfied with the scores i have got. I messed up with the verbal part of GMAT. I am planning to take it once more in Feb,2010 and targetting around 720 or atleast 700+. My profile goes like this:-

Academics:
B.Sc in Maths from Delhi University- 60%
M.Sc in Maths from Delhi University- 72%
Scored 97th percentile in GATE, conducted for persuing post-graduation.
M.Tech(Comp. App) from I.I.T Delhi -CGPA (7.96/10)

Work Ex:
I have been working with one of the biggest indian IT company for last 5.5 years, of which i have worked for 2 years in UK and around 8 months in Denmark. I would have gained an exp of arnd 7 yrs by the time i apply.
My carrier graph in the company has been like this:

Trainee -> Programmer -> Senior Programmer ->Onsite coordinator -> Lead Functional Expert -> Technical/project lead of the team.

My primary responsibilities involve handling clients, team issues and critical issues in application.I have always been a high performer through out my career. I expect to get a good reco.

Extra Curricular:- Not much to show.

I would also like to know whether taking GMAT more than 2 times have any negative impact on my application.

I am targetting top 10 B-Schools, if not admitted in ISB, Is my profile decent enough for applying in top 10 ?

Pls advice.

Thanks.

Dear sam151"

There are a lot more things that I need to know before I can tell you whether your profile is fit for the top 10. Something that is common in the admission criteria in all the top 10 schools is that they look for well-rounded individuals. You have to excel at work and beyond to make an impact.

Right now you have decent work-ex (judging by your career progression), although, the industry, sectoral experience has to come out with this. There has to be evidences of leadership potential at work and beyond. This (from the limited information that I have) is something I could not get in your profile pitch.

Hence, as of now, you need work to make your profile fit for the top 10 and also ISB. Start with strengthening your extra-curriculars (especially for U.S. based B-schools). As for the work-ex, bring out the uniqueness in your profile, maybe sectoral or functional expertise to differentiate you from the rest.

ThinkISB.

Dear Neha04

Your's is a very decent profile. But you will need 1 more year of experience before applying.

The development that you've shown at work is encouraging and you should strive for more responsibilities at work.

The other aspects (extra-curriculars, diversity) are good. You have to continue your involvement in these activities.
