The following appeared in an article in a health and fitness magazine:
"Laboratory studies show that Saluda Natural Spring Water contains several of the minerals necessary for good health and that it is completely free of bacteria. Residents of Saluda, the small town where the water is bottled, are hospitalized less frequently than the national average. Even though Saluda Natural Spring Water may seem expensive, drinking it instead of tap water is a wise investment to good health"
The bone of contention in this argument is that Saluda Natural Spring Water is better for your health when compared to tap water. The argument does not highlight the specific differences between drinking tap water and Saluda Natural Spring Water. The author is ambiguous and vague in the facts that he has provided that favors Saluda Natural Spring Water.
First, the author does not provide a list of the minerals that are found in Saluda Natural Spring Water so that the reader can compare side by side with those in the tap water. Moreso, the author states that the Spring water contains minerals that are good for your health. But, how does the mineral content in the Spring Water compare with that prescribed by the Food and Drug Administration nutritional daily intake required for good health?
Second, the author argues that residents of Saluda, the small town where the water is bottled, are hospitalized less frequently than the national average. This argument is vague because it is as though he is comparing apples and oranges. The author should compare hospitalizations with other towns of similar size and economic status. The national average is too broad a parameter to use for comparison. Also, the author fails to address the issue of how many residents consume water from the springs as compared to those who use tap water in Saluda. Also, not all hospitalizations can be attributed to the consumption of tap water versus spring water.
Third, I would not invest in Spring water, which is more expensive, when tap water provides the same benefit.
Thus, the author fails in his attempt to capture the real reasons why consumers should invest in spring water as opposed to tap water. His reasoning and very vague and require further verification.
