"In any large business organization, teamwork is the ultimate key to the organization's success."
In your view, how accurate is the foregoing statement? Use reasons and/or examples from your experience, observation, and/or reading to explain your viewpoint.
Although the foregoing statement holds merit, it does not tell the complete story. Teamwork is just one of the ingredients for a successfull business. Some of the other more importart aspects are, market research, product focus, technological advantage, vision of the leadership. The following paragraphs will elaborate on these points with examples and observations.
A large business is a complex organization, consisting of a lot of entities working in unison to make it a success. Each of those entities play a vital role towards the success of the business. Moreover, the success of a business cannot always be measured by its financial sucsess, Sometimes it should be measured by the non-tanginble assets, e.g by its goodwill.
If the success of business is measured by its ecomonic success, then teamwork is really a very small part of the success story. Take for example the financial success of NTP Inc. Its financial success is because of several successful litigations through patent infringment suits against other successfull businesses. In one of those lawsuits, NTP inc won against Reasearch In Motion Inc and got a financial windfall in the process. In this case, there is no the teamwork for this success, rather it was due to a mixture of luck, opportunity, and the patent landscape.
Secondly, teamwork is a double edged sword. For a business, which depends on time to market for successful products, too much teamwork can blur the vision of the product and destroy the market timing. It can steer the team away from the vision. Take the example of Transmeta Inc. It had a great team that worked together really well. But they were so much involved in making the product a perfect one that they completely ignored the market. And it lost to other chip-making companies, such as Intel and AMD. In this case, teamwork can be detrimental to the success of a business.
There are few other aspects of successful businesses that cannont be measured by financial success. It really depends on the vision of the leadership and motivation of the employees. A pool of driven employees can make a huge difference in the success. So is the leadership. Apple Inc has both of these ingredients that make it a hugely successful business despite its well-known differences between its operational team and design team.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that teamwork is just a small ingredient that makes an orginzation successfull, be it financial or something non-tangible. There are several other more important characteristics that have a bigger impact on the success of a business.
