25 y/o American female.
1) Work experience – worked for a top 5 consulting firm for the last 2 years. Previously, spent 1 ½ years in the Office of the Mayor in Chicago - liaised with constituents, prepared the mayor’s daily briefing materials, planned mayoral trips (int’l, domestic), worked with the press office to coordinate press events around the city (for which I traveled with the mayor) and planned community events at City Hall. = 3 years of work experience, plus 1/2 year of internship (I graduated early). I will have 4 years by the time I enter school in fall 2014.
2) GMAT: 650 on my first GMAT. Taking again on 6/15, and based on my recent CATs, expecting to score closer to 680-700.
3) Undergrad: Northwestern U 2010, 3.65 cum GPA (3.9 majors), political science / history double major, Spanish minor.
4) Extra-curriculars:
Post College
• Mayor’s office – responsibilities above (1 year as intern, ¾ year full time)
• Volunteer activities – Make-a-Wish, miscellaneous community events at mayor’s office, recently ran my first Tough Mudder (12 mile obstacle run) to raise money for Wounded Warrior, resume writing for veterans preparing to get out of the military
• Currently lead my firm’s recruiting team (approximately 12 people) to recruit undergrads and interns at Northwestern. Involves coordinating campus events, networking with students, reviewing resumes and selecting candidates for interviews.
College
• Undergraduate assistant to the Dean of NU – worked with Dean of Students and academic deans to identify school-specific issues and develop new programs for undergrads students
• NU Hearing and Appeals System – one of 10 students chosen to sit on a faculty board to oversee judicial and sanction hearings. Listened to hearings to determine the culpability of students accused of breaking campus policies.
• Led NU’s orientation program for two years for over 2,000 freshman and transfer students. Trained 260 student advisors and managed them throughout the academic year. Coordinated all activities during actual welcome week. Met with parents throughout the year to address academic concerns.
6) Your target programs. Kellogg, Columbia, Anderson, McCombs, Fuqua
7) When you plan to apply? Planning to apply R1 2013 (fall 2013) for my top programs (Kellogg, Columbia); will apply R2 (winter 2013/2014) for the others
8) Your post-MBA goal. My #1 goal out of my MBA is to develop the quant, problem solving and strategy skills that I did not get out of my liberal arts undergrad degree. I’m not strong in these areas, and as my firm becomes more analytics-based, I fear I will lack the skills to continue to perform and move forward in my career. I also think this skillset will give me a more well-rounded view of my clients and the heart of their businesses. If I am sponsored by my firm, I plan to return to the firm for which I currently work (you re-enter your original area after completing the full time MBA program).
