"People often complaint that products are not made to last. They feel that making products that wear out fairly quick wastes both natural and human resources. What they fail to see, however, is that such manufacturing practices keep cost down for the consumer and stimulate demand."

It is true that many people often complain that products are not made to last. They also have concerns about the natural and human resources associated with such products but they fail to consider the cost effectiveness and demand in the market for such products.
In the modern society with growing demand, high inflation and unemployment are the main concern. Also everybody wants to have everything but nobody wants to pay more.To withstand this demand, companies brought cheaper, low-quality, fast moving(consuming) products in the market. These cost effective products are accessible to all and have short life span. Add Gel, a pen manufacturing company, practice this system and has made profits in the highly competitive market. There was a time when Add pens were reused by replacing the refills, It's time now when a new pen cost same as a new refill. So, although the pen is wasteful at an early stage but the option to buy a new pen at same cost of refill is available to the customers.
The on demand availability of resources is beneficial for both consumers and the manufacturer. Increase in demand proportionates production and reuse. Though the reuse depends on the type of product but in the modern technological green environment, production houses are focusing on reusable products, this prevents the wastage of resources. One other advantage of fast products is that the efforts are distributed. In the Add Gel pen case, the efforts for making pen and the refill are replaced by two pens. So overall there is no human resource wastage but a better utilization.
One more factor people can consider with the present day products is that it gives option to a buyer even if he has less to spend in his kitty. If one has not got the better thing for the first time, he can afford to buy another one because of the cost effectiveness.
Finally the continuous demand and supply keeps market alive and provide niche for innovation and creativity. So based on the above analysis, it can be concluded that the manufacturing practices of fast use and throw, keep cost down for the consumers and stimulate demand.
