Hi Paul,
Here is my situation :
I am having a conventional IT profile (Indian) interested to do my MBA in Marketing.
- Engineering in Industrial Production (with 72% - not sure whats the GPA equivalent)
- 8 years of experience in IT - software
- 5 international IT certifications
- Have been activly involved in IT communities - in office and outside office.
- First GMAT - 640 but planning to give again - I know I can get around 720+
- Worked from developer to lead level (upto 30 people in a team)
- Working in US since 3 years as IT consultant
- Recently joined a Toastmasters group to improve my cummunication and leadership skills
- MSPA Certified (Mystry shopper certification)
- Have been ok in other fields like sports and extra curricular activities
The question is that I want to do a part time MBA in marketing from some of the top notch colleges (top 10 or 15). First - Do I stand a chance ?
Second if No- is there something I can do to improve my chances ?
If further No - what are your suggested colleges ?
Would appreciate your comments/thoughts for this kind of profile. BTW, planning to join college from 2009 onwards. So, still have 1 year to work on THE profile.
Thanks in advance
apnamit,
You will probably need at least a 700 to have a solid chance at top 10 or 15 programs, though your odds will be better for part-time programs. Your age may be a bit of a negative, assuming that you're in the age 30 category. Also, if you're aiming for top programs you will need not just "OK" extracurriculars/community involvements, but some leadership and impact in them. Finally, as you know your demographic is a very crowded one, so you will have to fight to stand out from the crowd. Assuming you get a 700 GMAT you could look at the following ranked marketing programs: Texas, Indiana, UNC, Wisconsin, Emory, Iowa, Vanderbilt perhaps Michigan.
Good luck,
