An author once wrote that “The invention of the telephone prevents us from appreciating the distance between us.” Today this is even more true as the rise of the Internet has enabled inexpensive global communication.
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the position stated above. Support your viewpoint using reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
------
Some people think that the invention of the Internet further prevents people from appreciating the distance between them. Other thinks that the Internet allows people to appreciate the distance between them even more. This issue is a controversial one but a closer examination reveals that the Internet indeed allow people to appreciate the distance between them even more. Hence, I disagree with the position stated above.
While the Internet has allowed people from all over the globe to talk to each other conveniently and inexpensively, it does not affect the conversation that people have with each other. For example, a person living in the US may talk to another person living in Asia about how terribly dark the night is. Because of the conversation they have about the time zone difference in which the person living in the US is experiencing a cold dark night while the person living in Asia is experiencing a bright and sunny morning, people are still able to appreciate the distance between each other. If the conversation between people has not change, then clearly the increased convenience for such conversations makes people more appreciative of the distance among them.
The Internet also allows more expressive communication in the form of video-conference. Without the Internet, people will be communicating though mails which are essentially words which are less expressive than voice and action. When a mother communicates with her son who is overseas over the Internet, the son is able to see his mother's expressions and hear her voice .These expressions and voice often reveal signs of how much she misses him because they are separated physically by a great distance. Clearly, the more expressive communication brought about by the Internet has reminded people of the distance between them more than ever, making people more appreciative of the distance between them.
Finally, despite the Internet ability to allow people to communicate more conveniently and more expressively, it does not allow people to participate in activities more readily. For example, although people can chat over the Internet about the fun times they had when they were playing basketball or soccer, the Internet does not allow people to come together to have a game of basketball or soccer in a physical environment. Such regrets again serve as a lingering reminder of how distance people are from one another and how much people should appreciate the distance between them.
In summary, while there are arguments to be made for both sides, it is clear that the decrease in cost of communication brought about by the Internet did not prevent people from appreciating the distance between them. In fact, it has allowed people to appreciate the distance between them even more. Therefore, I disagree with the position stated above.
