Question 1: here the problem gives you the radius and asks you to find the greatest possible height. Note the formula for the volume of a cylinder is Radiussquare*pi*height.

so if radius is 5 then radiusquare is 25. Thus is 25*pi* the greatest possible height which is 8. So 25*8*pi= 200pi

We picked 8 because since 10 is our diameter, thus 10 and 12 can't be the height of the cylinder, if they were, the cylinder wouldnt fit into the box (cant fit a circle of diameter 10 in a box 8x10 or 8x12).

I'm not very sure about question 2. Even assuming there is 2 equations with equation 1 having roots a and c, and equation2 having roots b and c. Then x-a/x-b could be a lot of different values.

Hmmm, can't seem to figure out #2 either...what is the source...do you have an explanation that you can share with us?

Hey Karan ... Firstly...DONT PANIC!!

Q1 - 10 is the diameter, so 10 and 12 has to be sides of the base, hence, 8 can be the height.
Area = pi.h.r^2 = pi.25.8 = 200pi.

Q2 - Question is not clear but i'll interpret it my way and try to help.

Looks like you're talking about 2 quadratic equation, heaving a, b , c roots , where c is common to both.
Assuming the above -
Equation for 1st quadratic equation = k1(x-a)(x-c) = 0 , k1 is constant.
Equation for 2nd quadratic equation = k2(x-b)(x-c) = 0 , k2 is constant.

Divide both = (x-a)/(x-b) = 0

Hope it helps.!

All the best.
Cheers,
Aj.
