PMP or PgMP Certification [#permalink]

My current employer is offering to pay for the exam and any expenses associated with getting a Project Management Professional (PMP) or Program Management Professional (PgMP) certification though PMI. My manager seems to think that the work that I do now would count for either certificate, so I really have my choice of which one to get. The requirements for PMP are 3 years of project experience, versus the 4 years of program experience required for PgMP.
My question is, which is seen as a better certificate? I know that it depends on what I want to do with it, so here is some information about myself:
Currently Age: 26 Industry: Government Position: Project Manager overseeing a federal program at the state level Education: BS in Business and currently 1st year part-time MBA at UC Davis
Where I want to go Industry: Automotive manufacturing Position: Product management
