Police is or Police are? [#permalink] New post 31 Jul 2012, 06:21
Hi..
While reading about the collective nouns section, i read that Police is one of the collective nouns and is thus always treated as singular.
However, i have read many conflicting articles all over the internet and am thus confused.

Kindly clarify whether - "Police is" OR "Police are" ??

Police is plural when you refer to people and singular when you are talking about an organization .

I actually disagree with bb on this one; my understanding, confirmed by a quick Google check, is that "the police" is always plural, and we refer to "a policeman/woman" or "a police department/force" when we need a singular form of "the police."
