Politician: From the time our party took office almost four [#permalink]
03 Jan 2004, 11:20
Question Stats:
100% (01:47) correct
0% (00:00) wrong based on 1 sessions
22. Politician: From the time our party took office almost four years ago the number of people unemployed city-wide increased by less than 20 percent. The opposition party controlled city government during the four preceding years, and the number of unemployed city residents rose by over 20 percent. Thus, due to our leadership, fewer people now find themselves among the ranks of the unemployed, whatever the opposition may claim.
The reasoning in the politician┬б┬пs argument is most vulnerable to the criticism that
(A) the claims made by the opposition are simply dismissed without being specified
(B) no evidence has been offered to show that any decline in unemployment over the past four years was uniform throughout all areas of the city
(C) the issue of how much unemployment in the city is affected by seasonal fluctuations is ignored
(D) the evidence cited in support of the conclusion actually provides more support for the denial of the conclusion
(E) the possibility has not been addressed that any increase in the number of people employed is due to programs supported by the opposition party.

This is a goofy question.
From the time our party took office ... the number of people unemployed city-wide increased by less than 20 percent.
So the number of unemployed people grew pretty fast.
The opposition party controlled city government during the preceding years, and the number of unemployed city residents rose by over 20 percent.
So the number of unemployed people grew really fast.
Thus, due to our leadership, fewer people now find themselves among the ranks of the unemployed,
This is patently false. The first statement says the the number of unemployed grew!!
Gotta be D.

Answer is D.
I cannot understand stoolfi's explaination. In both the cases unemployment increased, but slowly when the new party came to power. How can it support the denial of the claim. Does it mean that rate at which people are unemployed has actually slowed down.
I hope some one can explain this more.

anand-- You complain when we don't explain our answers, and you complain when we do. Therefore, anandk is insatiable.
Trying again:
The politician claims that " fewer people now find themselves among the ranks of the unemployed"
But the number of unemployed rose: "From the time our party took office... the number of people unemployed... increased by less than 20 percent."
These statements are completely incompatible!
If the politician had said "the percentage growth in the number of unemployed has slowed under our administration" he'd be correct. But he said the there were fewer unemployed people, when in fact the number of people unemployed... increased by less than 20 percent."
