initially picked D, can see why its E now.

Since the first part of the sentence says 'Possible', I figured saying 'may' would be redundant, so immediately eliminated choices with may.

rise : Verb
rising : Noun
Melting : Noun

and now I am more confused :cry:

I agree that rise is a verb but it can also work as a noun. You don't use article "a" with verbs. "rise" is a noun in this context. Here "rise" is working as a noun. Here is the link
