Bunnel , I didn't understand when the largest positive integer in the list is 7 , how did the range become 7-1 = 6 , shouldn't it be 7

Solution:

Set K = ( -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
Range is defined as the highest value of f(x) and the lowest value of f(x). Over here the range will be 7 - (-4) = 11.

Try making a graph of the set K and see what is the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value.

positive integers in the list k={1,2,3,4,5,6,7}
range=(7-1)=6

Simple one. However, the only thing to notice in this question is "range of the positive integers". You miss this and you are gone :P

numbers are -4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7

range of positive numbers = 7-1= 6

note: zero is neither positive nor negative. it is neutral.

The set is {-4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}.

The range of the POSITIVE integers in the list is {largest} - {smallest} = 7 - 1 = 6.
The range of the NEGATIVE integers in the list is {largest} - {smallest} = -1 - (-4) = 3.

The range of the whole set is {largest} - {smallest} = 7 - (-4) = 11.

nth term in given by \(a_n\) = \(a_1\) + (n-1) d
We are given that \(a_1\)= -4 and hence we can solve for a_12 and n=12

This is so cheeky from GMAT.

The question asks what is the range of positive integers, not the range of the set.
so, answer is 7-1 = 6 not 7-(-4)=11

Range in a set is defined as difference between maximum and minimum.
Maximum +ve = 7
Minimum +ve = 1
Range = 7 - 1 = 6.

Also, some people do mistake in counting numbers.
In this case, 12 numbers include -4 , so the maximum number will be (-4 +12 ) -1 = 7

ohhhh GMAT!...putting some small words and we are trapped :cry: :cry:

trying to hurry....I thought the que will always be asking about the normal range (max-min)...and quickly put the answer as 11. :x

We are given that list K consists of 12 consecutive integers.

"Consecutive integers" ALWAYS mean integers that follow each other in order with a common difference of 1: ... x-3, x-2, x-1, x, x+1, x+2, ....

For example:

    -7, -6, -5 are consecutive integers.

    2, 4, 6 ARE NOT consecutive integers, they are consecutive even integers.

    1, 3, 5 ARE NOT consecutive integers, they are consecutive odd integers.
