Which of the following is an assumption upon which the argument depends?

A)Many musicians prefer contemporary folk songs.
B)Those that fully appreciate contemporary folk songs enjoy contemporary folk songs.
C)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs understand the history of American country music.
D)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.
E)Many musicians fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.

If you like the question or the answer..give kudos please !

SO the only reason why Option C is incorrect is because it is restating the information from the passage??
An Assumption is an unstated idea that supports the conclusion

Many musicians do not appreciate FS -> They do not have as much understanding as those who fully appreciate.
Those who prefer have more understanding than many musicians but that doesn't mean they have full understanding or that doesn't mean that they have as good understanding as those who fully appreciate. Option C IMO has been written in a very generic which may be implied as true or may not be, so it is not correct.

Above is my understnading, Experts please shed some light on the reasoning.

To fully appreciate contemporary folk songs is to understand the history of American country music more comprehensively than those that do not understand the history of American country music. Many musicians do not appreciate contemporary folk songs. Therefore, those that prefer contemporary folk songs have more of an understanding of the history of American country music than many musicians.

B)Those that fully appreciate contemporary folk songs enjoy contemporary folk songs.
C)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs understand the history of American country music.
D)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.
E)Many musicians fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.

SO a and e are clearly out if you negate them .

B - > Those that fully appreciate contemporary folk songs enjoy contemporary folk songs.
negate - > Those that fully appreciate contemporary folk songs do not enjoy contemporary folk songs.

prefer = understanding = appreciate ; here those who are enjoying are appreciating so they do have understanding ; this doesnt tear the conclusion ,

C)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs understand the history of American country music. same as conclusion ,

D)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.

negate - > D)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs do not fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.

one who prefers dont appreciate ; this means he doent have knowledge as hence the conclusion fails as prefer = understanding = appreciate .

To fully appreciate contemporary folk songs is to understand the history of American country music more comprehensively

Many musicians do not appreciate contemporary folk songs.

Therefore, those that prefer contemporary folk songs have more of an understanding of the history of American country music than many musicians.

Which of the following is an assumption upon which the argument depends?

There is a clever wordplay involving and interchanging words prefer and appreciate.

Assumption: those who appreciate contemporary folk songs prefer them.

A)Many musicians prefer contemporary folk songs........This does not form an assumption infact negates it like choice E.
B)Those that fully appreciate contemporary folk songs enjoy contemporary folk songs............sounds awkward and not preferable in comparison with D due to word enjoy.
C)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs understand the history of American country music........this is not an assumption but a conclusion.
D)Those that prefer contemporary folk songs fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.
E)Many musicians fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.........negates the premise. Opposite

Re: To fully appreciate contemporary folk songs is to understand the [#permalink]
I think the question is a typo "To fully appreciate contemporary folk songs is to understand the history of American country music more comprehensively than those that do not understand the history of American country music."

So the prompt is saying to fully appreciate CFS--> Means you Know the history--> More than Those who do not understand the history

It should say more than those who do not fully appreciate CFS. I think the question should be eliminated due to a typo. How can you understand the history more comprehensively than those who do not understand. It's pretty nonsensical.

Then it says Many musicians do not appreciate CFS

Conclusion Those that prefer CFS---> Understanding of Country Music

So the conclusion is resting on the fact that those that prefer CFS understand CM. However we only know those that fully appreciate CFS understand ACM. It says nothing about prefer. So the conclusion is resting on the assumption in D.

(E) Many musicians fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.

Our statements:
1. Fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.
2. Understand history more comprehensively
3. Many do not appreciate - we can say it is the same as not 2.
4. Prefer contemporary folk songs

Premises from the passage:
1 ---> 2
3 ----> not 2

Conclusion:
4 ---> 2.

What do we miss? Sure, this one: 4 --->1.
Now 4 ---> 1 ---> 2.

This matches to option D. Prefer ---> Appreciate.

1-APPRECIATE FOLK<======> UNDERSTAND HISTORY
2-PREFER FOLK<=========> UNDERSTAND HISTORY

PREFER FOLK=====>APPRECIATE FOLK (this is the link,assumption)

Re: To fully appreciate contemporary folk songs is to understand the [#permalink]
Veritas Prep OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The conclusion is that musicians who prefer folk have more of an understanding of country than “many musicians.” The premise focuses on the link between appreciating folk and understanding country. The correct option will link the idea of appreciation in the premise to the new idea of preference in the conclusion. (B) is tempting, but there could be musicians who prefer but don’t understand contemporary folk songs if this statement were true. If these musicians don’t understand contemporary folk songs, then they probably do not have more of an understanding.

The correct response is (D).

(A) Many musicians prefer contemporary folk songs. ( CANT BE ASSUMED. FALSE.)

(B) Those that fully appreciate contemporary folk songs enjoy contemporary folk songs. ( we talk about understanding not enjoyment")

(C) Those that prefer contemporary folk songs understand the history of American country music. ( this is A trap answer that I avoided :lol: - its not assumption it is restatement of information given in the argument )

(D) Those that prefer contemporary folk songs fully appreciate contemporary folk songs. (CORRECT. SINCE I ELIMINATED C, I AM LEFT WITH D.

(E) Many musicians fully appreciate contemporary folk songs. ( FALSE INFORMATION. CANT BE ASSUMED FOR SURE)

C isn’t an assumption, it basically just restates information from the passage. B introduces a new idea, the passage never mentions enjoyment in its logic. A and E are wrong because they mention the number of musicians that prefer/fully appreciate contemporary folk music and that information is not relevant to the argument. So, D is the correct option.

Re: To fully appreciate contemporary folk songs is to understand the [#permalink]

Analysis:
appreciate contemporary folk songs(A) -> understand the history of American country music(B)
musicians(C)-> do not appreciate contemporary folk songs(not of B)
Therefore, prefer contemporary folk songs(D) -> understanding of the history of American country music (B) > many musicians.(C)

A->B
C->not B
Therefore, D ->B > C

Now, In conclusion D and B are connected, but it is not given in premise. So there exist a logical gap that needs o be filled.
What is the way in which D can reach B?
Using A->B
So, to fill in the gap we need assumption : D->A->B
Therefore, D -> B

So, assumption is: prefer contemporary folk songs(D) ->appreciate contemporary folk songs(A)
Option D: Those that prefer contemporary folk songs fully appreciate contemporary folk songs.

Hence D

I was super confused between C and D. My gut feeling told me to for D. Now I'm not sure whether it was a fluke or a proper reasoning. Please help me understand why C was incorrect. Was it just because it was a re-statement ? Thankss !

Hi Taiz

Let me try to address your query. If we analyze the stimulus, we can observe a subtle language shift that occurs between the premises and the conclusion.

Premise: To fully appreciate contemporary folk songs --> understand the history of American country music.
Conclusion: Those that prefer contemporary folk songs --> more of an understanding of the history of American country music.

As you can see, the premise talks about "appreciation" while the conclusion talks about "preference". Therefore, any answer option that links these two should be the correct answer.

If we examine option (C):

Those that prefer contemporary folk songs understand the history of American country music.

This is not linking "appreciation" and "preference" but only "preference" and "understanding" - this link is already made in the conclusion of the stimulus and does not act as an assumption on which the conclusion depends. Hence option (C) is incorrect.

The required linkage is made adequately in option (D) and hence is the correct answer.

Hope this helps.
