hi jose,

nice post , i have compiled them in a excel file.

i would like to upload it so that it is handy with everyone.

do let me know if you are going to tell other 10 distractors also.

Everybody : If you think anything else should be added in this list let me know.

Would love to compile it all at one place.

it could be a good resource for SC.

Thanks Jose, amazing post. Really helps! :)

I agree with all your points, however I would like to add that when I was taking mocks of GMATPrep I realised that a lot of importance was given to the meaning of the sentence. And due to paucity of time I marked a lot of incorrect options. Learning is that meaning of the sentence is also very important.

Thank you very much for pointing which distractors are the most common trip-ups for GMAT test takers, especially the subject-verb agreement. They are very simple but, when in a hurry, can be easily missed.

Cheers to your students doing well and best regards!

Distractor 2 (-ing ending)

Be very wary of answer choices that add an -ing verb (or ing- anything). 9 times out of 10 the answer choice can be eliminated. Here is an example.

Narwhals can be called whales of the ice: in icy channels, ponds, and ice-shielded bays, they seek sanctuary from killer whales, their chief predator, and whose annual migrations following the seasonal rhythm of advancing and retreating ice.

In the original stem, the word follow does not have an ing ending. There are various reasons for why adding an -ing ending is incorrect but I will not overwhelm you with those. Remember, if you see an -ing answer choice, think eliminate! Read it to yourself aloud and ask does this sound right? 9 times out of 10 it will not!

Hi Jose, I have a doubt here. Please clarify.

I have read the VAN concept which says verb form is preferred than Adjective form than a noun form. So how does this concept of VAN go along with your theory as you are saying to eliminate the ing form of verb having ans options.?

Thank you
