Hi,

In this case, "direct" is an adjective trying to modify a noun.

Case D: "direct communication" -> "direct" emphasizes the communication; The mode of communication is direct and through means of psychedelic awakening

Case C: "communication with the latter directly" -> directly to spiritual dimension and not through any other dimension. "Directly" modifies "spiritual dimension".

Examples of such kind.

1. I felt a direct connection with X when I met him/her -> emphasizes connection
2. I connected to X directly through an email -> not through Y or Z

Hope it helps :)

To expand on AMITAGARWAL2's explaination as to why C is not correct, the word "Directly" in C, is a Verb+ly verb and can only modify verbs... that is, "Directly" cannot modify "the latter", which is "a spiritual dimension"

At first, I thought D's "direct communication" changed the meaning of "communication", however it seems that this is correct and that they have the same meaning

C is wrong because 'direct' was intended to be used in front of the communication. Why do we need to use directly and through at the same time?

The Luquiens believed that everything had both a physical dimension and a spiritual dimension, and many Luquiens claimed to have communication with it directly through a psychedelic awakening.

(A) communication with it directly through
Pronoun "it" ambiguous, "directly" wrongly modify claimed instead of communication

(B) direct communication with it by way of
Ambiguous pronoun "it", "by way of" is awkward

(C) communication with the latter directly through
As mentioned in A

(D) direct communication with the latter by means of
"direct" correctly modify communication; "the latter" represent "a spiritual dimension"

(E) communication directly with the spiritual level due to
"directly" is wrong, "due to" is not gramatically correct and awkward

Mistakes :
1. Ambiguous Pronoun "It" , what it refers to does it refer to physical or It refers to Spiritual.
2. Modifier Directly Adverb : what is tries to modify, "psychedelic awakening" Noun hence potentially it is wrong.

(A) communication with it directly through
Incorrect - Ambiguous Pronoun "It"

(B) direct communication with it by way of
Incorrect - Ambiguous Pronoun "It"

(C) communication with the latter directly through
Incorrect - Modifier Directly Adverb : what is tries to modify, "psychedelic awakening" Noun hence potentially it is wrong.

(D) direct communication with the latter by means of
Correct - Fixed "It" and Direct is adjective modifying noun communication.

(E) communication directly with the spiritual level due to
Incorrect - Modifier Directly Adverb : what is tries to modify, "psychedelic awakening" Noun hence potentially it is wrong.

Also, this is important Question Type I saw, Many questions framed on same logic, with typically same option choice " later, It". Saw it Magoosh , Gmat official , Gmat Prep

AjiteshArun :

In option A, C, and E, What adverb "directly" is modifying? Is it modifying different things in all the three sentences, or Is modifying the same thing?

How to recognise what is being modified?
