Re: tricky between vs among [#permalink]
The preliminary deal agreed between six world powers and Iran over its nuclear programme has been hailed as an opportunity to end years of global tension

Source: www.scientificamerican.com/article/iran ... r-science/

Why in the above sentence 'between' is used while we have 7 parties?

Is that because all 'six world powers' are considered as a single, united entity?

Furthermore, is it idiomatic to say 'agreed among'?

Exactly, the six world powers are one entity and Iran is the other, so between is the proper word.

Agreed among is perfectly fine. The sentence could have read: "The preliminary deal agreed among six world powers over Iran's nuclear..."

hi pranay04k,

In general, between is for two items and among is for more than two items. If the items are not distinct from each other you use among. For instance, Among romance languages, French is the most difficult. But if the items are distinct you would use between, even if there are more than two items. For instance, He couldn't decide between French, Spanish, or Italian.
