To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
The reflection of indigenous traits of a society comes from how strongly are its people connected to their social values and culture. The more strongly they are bonded to their customs and values, the more they reflect their rich social heritage. Moreover, the strength of a culture also depends on how strongly its society is connected and how strongly it believes in its values. However, with the rise in Globalization and social media , the whole world is connected to each other. Subsequently, people learn about others social values and inherit some of their traits, creating a motley of cultures. Hence, it becomes quite laborious to understand a discrete society.
Major cities reflect the global view as they are the source of change. Everything originates from there and starts dispersing to each segment of society. Similarly, people living in major cities are more connected to world than any other segment of society. Subsequently, they inherit more values of other cultures. Moreover, with the advancement in technology and higher rate of literacy in major cities, the needs and desires of people are also rising. They aspire to lead a comfortable and luxurious life and to achieve the same, they work day and night. Hence, it becomes quite difficult for them to maintain a social and professional life. Thus, major cities rather makes it difficult to understand the most important characteristics of a society.
However, comparatively it is quite convenient to study areas near countryside to understand the prominent characteristics of society as the reach of technology is quite limited there. Moreover, they get ample time to sustain their culture and social values. For instance, American culture has been preserved by Red Indians living in a countryside or the values of Indus valley civilization are still sustained by people living in remote areas of Sindh,Punjab and Kashmir.
Hence, the true reflection of a society comes from the areas who still strongly believe in their culture and have strongly incorporated the values of their ancestors in them. The will to sustain the heritage is missing in people living in major cities. Hence, studying major cities does not help in any way in understanding the true values of society.
