used the table thing and it took me exactly 4.11 in the CAT and my eyes went clocky and dizzy towards the solution that i had to close my eyes and breathe before getting comfortable enough to do the next question. i guess @bunuel's equation method needs a good learning.

Guys,
The info "1/6 of the pieces on display are sculptures" is useless, right?
I have answer without using it. Is it added to the question for distract?

Correct, even if that information is not given, we can calculate the answer. Hence, Its just to distract test takers.

Hi All,

This question can be solved either algebraically or by TESTing THE ANSWERS. We're asked for the TOTAL PIECES OF ART the gallery has….we know that there are only 2 types: paintings and sculptures….

First, we're told that 1/3 of the pieces are on display, so the total MUST be a multiple of 3. Let's TEST Answer B first (Answer D is NOT a multiple of 3, so it CANNOT be the answer).

If….
Total pieces of art = 450
Pieces on Display = (1/3)(450) = 150

1/6 of the pieces on display are sculptures
Pieces on Display = 150
Sculptures on Display = (1/6)(150) = 25
Paintings on Display = 125

Pieces NOT on Display = 300
Paintings = (1/3)(300) = 100
Sculptures = 200 --> This matches the last piece of information PERFECTLY.

Thus, the total number of pieces MUST be 450.

Final Answer:

A. 360
B. 450
C. 540
D. 640
E. 720

We see that 2/3 of the art pieces are not on display. So 1/3 x 2/3 = 2/9 of the art pieces are paintings not on display, and 2/3 x 2/3 = 4/9 of the art pieces are sculptures not on display. Since there are 200 sculptures not on display, and if we let x = total number of art pieces, we have:

(4/9)x = 200

x = 200 * (9/4) = 50 * 9 = 450

An art gallery has only paintings and sculptures. Currently, 1/3 of the pieces of art are displayed, and 1/6 of the pieces on display are sculptures. If 1/3 of the pieces not on display are paintings, and 200 sculptures are not on display, how many pieces of art does the gallery have?

If 1/3 of the pieces of art are displayed, then 2/3 of the pieces of art are not displayed.

Of the 2/3 pieces not on display, 1/3 are paintings and 2/3 are sculptures.

We're told the 2/3 sculptures = 200. Therefore the 2/3 pieces of display = 300.

3/3 = 450. Answer is B.

I think the best solution is to check the answer.
First keep in mind that answer will be divisible by 3. So (D) 640 is out
360/3 = 120
so Not on display = 240
2/3 of 240 = 160, which is not 200. So option (A) is out. and we are so close to get our answer

Now 450/3 = 150
so Not on display = 300
2/3 of 300 = 200, which is 200 that is stated in the question. Walaaa got answer (B)

VeritasKarishma if 2/3 are not on display and 1/3 of the pieces not on display are paintings , i interpreted it as 1/3 *2/3
why its wrong ?

Lets say G is the total number of pieces the gallery has (exhibited + not exhibited)

Pieces not exhibited = (2/3)*G
Paintings which are not exhibited = (1/3)*(2/3)*G
Sculpures which are not exhibited= 200 = (2/3)*(2/3)*G

Solving for G -> G = 450 pieces.

Answer is B.

Nothing wrong in that though we need to focus on sculptures.

(1/3) of Total are on display so (2/3) of Total are not on display.
(1/3)rd of this (2/3) of Total are paintings so (2/3)rd of this (2/3) of Total are sculptures not on display.

(2/3) * (2/3) * Total = 200
Total = 450
