I took the GMAT today and scored a 47Q/45V - 740. Obviously this is a solid score but is there any reason to be concerned with a Q47 as it's now 68%? I majored in finance at a top public (mich, berk, uva) with a 3.6 gpa and spent 1+ years in high yield credit research at a top investment bank before starting my own ecommerce business. My target schools are Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, Sloan and Haas.
Well, we are certainly in different times now with the GMAT. Mean scores keep rising, and so you are wondering if a 740 is good enough. We used to wonder if 700-720 was good enough:)
The truth is you are targeting the very top schools and it sounds like you have many things going for your candidacy---including a bold move away from finance into your own tech venture (by the way, how has the company done in revenues?). So yes, you are fine....especially for say, Booth. But for HBS and Stanford, it's not about being "OK" anymore. It's about leaving nothing on the table. How long did you study for the GMAT, and was this your first time taking it? If you have been at this a while and feel there is little meat left on the GMAT bone, then move on confidently. But if you have the time and feel that you could do materially better on the quant, why not? Many people tend to come to my consulting practice for the very top schools, and you would be shocked at some of the high quality resumes I see, where folks miss HBS and GSB. Could the 770 have helped them? Probably.
If my response makes you feel slightly more neurotic, sorry. These are different MBA times for the top 2. But will you likely end up at a top 7 school, after solid essays? YES!
