      For the first time in my life, I got to play paintball (did I tell everyone that I became a first year representative for the Rotman Gaming Club? haha). Although it took me two hours just to get there, I wanted to show my support as a first year rep, but most importantly, I never played one before and wanted to experience. Here’s what I thought. 1. Real shooting is nowhere close to Call of Duty or Counter Strike :p 2. Just after two games, you find yourself panting really hard. It’s probably just me. 3. I definitely need to wear contacts to play this. Other than that, it was a great exercise and fun shooting paintballs (and getting hit which stings a lot…)

     Today was a great day. I met professor Roger Martin for the first time. Great researcher and a professor who brought integrative thinking and business design to Rotman, his book ‘The Opposable Mind’ and the concept of integrative thinking is what brought me to Rotman, and I’m glad to be a part of this community. I was somewhat scared just like any other time whenever I meet great, well-known people, but what I realized as soon as I started talking to him after the presentation is that he is extremely nice! He welcome me to the Rotman community, personally signed the book with my name, and even kindly agreed to take the photo with me. Hopefully I can continue to work towards greatness just like him.

 Despite being a long weekend with Thanksgiving, this week was very tiring for me in various ways. Besides the pressure of learning materials I am not familiar with such as finance and accounting (I’m electrical engineering background), I had homework but also was chosen as the first group to present in finance class about bonds. After I came back from school on Friday, I fell asleep right away. I am going to make sure that I keep the promise I made in foundation term that I will make sure to stay up to date with course materials.

   Third week of term 1 has started and let me tell you. It’s hard! There’s so much work to do and you always have to be on the loop. Of course we’re not kids anymore, and great studies and opportunities come with great responsibilities, so I’m actually trying to enjoy my challenges. I’m working as some of the club 1st year representatives and participating in as many events as possible. I recently played Mafia game and also watched mayoral debate. Lot of stuff going on.

The Cambridge open day wasn’t quite what I was used to; no sample lectures, no hard and heavy approach; and it even started with a sandwich lunch. Overall I liked the approach, laid back, friendly and allowed us MBA’ers getting to know each other was just as important as the school sell. So I found out that we had a glamorous lady from Ferrari, a lot of people working in healthcare including a GP, and the normal sprinkling of lawyers and bankers. The group was bright, friendly and international- though most of us work in London. The school emphases it’s collaborative nature, it’s connection to the wider uni, and the benefit of interacting with students from other disciplines; all that I’m looking for. It also heavily emphasised its entreneurenship and access to Cambridge tech circle/ siclion Fen. One of the odd bits of the Cambridge experience is the emphasis on socialising with your college. I tried and failed to find MBA societies. Socailising is done through the college; a bit different but I think I like it, no goldfish bowl living. So next challenge is to pick a college, anyone any suggestions? Even better the business school, is smack bang in the middle of Cambridge which is awesome. I’m sold! Overall, I think the MBA undersells it self. It might be a deliberate choice, or maybe it’s waiting for more famous alumni before it starts. But it’s worth look if your looking for. Slightly different experience from the normal fishbowl approach.

It is that time of year again – time for Clear Admit’s annual Best of Blogging voting. Dating way back to the 2004-2005 application season, the Best of Blogging has been awarded to outstanding writers that contribute to the business school blogosphere. While I don’t think I’ll ever be on the red capret for a Grammy, Oscar, ESPY, VMA, Tony, Golden Globe, or Emmy awards ceremony, I’m thrilled to be nominated for Clear Admit’s BoB 2013-2014. Truth be told, I wasn’t planning on updating the blog until I got some experience at this whole MBA thing, but this nomination has drawn me out of my hiding b school preparations. Look forward to that “I’m no longer an applicant, but rather a crazy, tired, excited, nervous MBA student” post soon. For my loyal readers (Do I have any left??), You may remember that last year I was nominated as well. I was in complete shock, because my blog was only a few months old, and had very little going on. Not only that, but I was up against legends such as Cheetarah, MBAover30, and TheSenator. At the time I had just under 2,000 views, and had just began looking at writing essays. Today I’m closing in on 40,000 views, and am trying to fill out health history forms so I can go to Johnson in the fall. The difference a year makes. Last year, I noted that it was a strange feeling for me, as many of the nominees are those that inspired me to start my blog. Now it comes full circle, as I got a note last week that someone else was starting their blog, and listed me as an inspiration! Ah yes. Funemployment. The time between when you quit your job and when you start your MBA. The promised land that many MBA applicants seek. The break that every one of my peers is a tad jealous about. But it isn’t all sunshine and roses. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t been at work since early June. I’ve been spending my time golfing, going to the beach, eating good food, visiting friends and family, and just plain relaxing. But I’ve also received a long to-do list from Cornell over this summer that includes Accounting reading/homework, MBAMath prep, Career webinars, Personal branding exercises, suggested reading, exemption exam preparation, and many other things. Also on that list are many to-do items not directly related to the MBA program: Planning for housing, healthcare changes, organizing financials, physical/immunizations, etc. Throw in the stress of making a good first impression in meeting new classmates, pressure of doing well in a new academic environment, and uncertainty with recruiting and careers, and you can see that funemployment isn’t quite the most relaxing stuff.  So whats my point? My point is leave yourself plenty of time when you do get accepted at your dream school. Don’t work right up to the deadline to save an additional $1500. Sure, it is important to be financially responsible as you begin to realize the massive cost of your MBA, but it is important that you show up to your program both relaxed and prepared. I’ve found that quitting early has allowed me to work at all of those items listed above while being able to enjoy my time off. While I’m not quite done with my list, I’ve been fortunate to have one of the most relaxing couple of months I can remember.  Now if you’ll excuse me, Professor Libby is expecting me to read about financial statement adjustments. | FROM The Oxford Comma: Post MBA: Week Six Mini Update |

It’s now been exactly six weeks since the graduation ceremony that was held at the Sheldonian and I think it’s a good time to give a mini update on where things stand. Housing If you are planning to stay back and look for jobs after graduation, your first dilemma will center around your post graduation location i.e Oxford or London. There are pros and cons to either location and you should make the decision based on your situation. My initial impulse was to stick around in Oxford as it would have been much more convenient to move my things to another location in Oxford. Furthermore, I would have been able to use the library and other facilities in the business school. However, I found that it was really difficult to find short term housing in Oxford, and I reluctantly abandoned my plans to stay there. I eventually wound up moving to South London with three of my classmates. London is more expensive than Oxford but it does have a few advantages. Oxford is very different from the outside world and after a year there, you can find yourself in a bubble. Moving to London in some ways feels like moving back into the real world and this can be useful in the job search process. I am also able to attend events and network with product managers in London by attending Meetups and I do not think it would have been as easy if I did not live here. The last reason may seem trivial, but it’s also an opportunity to live in London for a while and experience what the city has to offer. I would say that in terms of numbers, approximately 20 students from my class chose to stay back in Oxford, while around 50 or so moved to London. The London numbers also include those who found work and hence moved there to begin their jobs. Job Hunting In the past six weeks, I have had three job interviews. One did not lead to an offer, while I am still in the interview process and waiting to hear back from the other two. The visa issue is frustrating as there have been three other companies in the UK that wanted to interview me but could not as they would have been unable to sponsor my work visa. I have had pretty good results applying to technology companies in Berlin. This is probably very specific advice to those looking to work at technology companies, but as Berlin is trying to establish itself as a hub for technological entrepreneurship in Europe, there do seem to be some opportunities there. I have been speaking to my Indian classmates who are here looking for jobs and the good news is that many seems to be getting invitations to interview and are hopeful of receiving job offers. The economic climate has improved and things do seem to be better for our class than the batch before us. However, it is also true that a few have left and returned to India as they did not feel that their prospects were good. The standard for most business schools is to report the employment numbers three months after graduation. Hence I think it would be premature to pass judgement until then. I will give a jobs update in mid December and hopefully a clearer picture will emerge.

     One of the main strengths of Rotman comes from its diversity and when we speak of diversity, we mean it in terms of class distribution and the number of events supported at Rotman. Recently, I had a chance to try samosas and sugar cakes (sorry not sure about the actual name), and it was amazing, also very sweet.

  After three years of unhealthy life in the US, I have sworn myself never to go back to such routine again when I started MBA this September. I am taking my personal training exam in December, 3 days after my term 1 final. Health is important to me. Very important. If you’re healthy, you can always get back even when you fail, but you can’t get back when you’re sick and at that point, money or any kind of wealth can’t make you any happy.

 Foundation term GPA is out. I didn’t do so bad, but not so good either. Wherever you go, there are smarter people. I am impressed. So much to learn. But I have to remember that all this process of learning is what I so much wanted to do. It’s happy kind of tiredness. Storm of case competitions, exams, and assignments are coming. Must be ready.

 so actually alongside the MBA studies, I am studying for personal trainer exam in December as a side. I can basically only read when I’m in the subway, but it’s been a good read so far. As I always mention in my blog writings, I used to be very overweight and I’ve sworn myself never to go back to that time. Remember. Studies and career are important, but health is the top priority.
