In year X a total of 355 billion dollars was spent for health care in the United States, 30 percent of which was spent by private health insurance companies. Was the amount spent for health care by the federal government's medicare program less than 60 billion dollars?

(1) In year X medicare spent more than 1/2, but less than 2/3, of the amount spent by the private health insurance companies for health care.
(2) In year X medicare spent 50 billion dollars less for health care than the amount spent by private health insurance companies.

Kudos for a correct solution.

Given Total Spend on Health Care=355
Spend by PHIC =0.3*355=106.5

We need to find whether FGMP spent was <60 B US$

St 1 says FGMP spend 1/2 of PHIC < FGMP spend <2/3 PHIC or 53.25<PHIC spend < 70.2 Not sufficient. A and D ruled out

St 2 says FGMP = PHIC spend -50 pr FGMP=106.5-50 =56.5... sufficient..

A gives a range of values from 53... to 67...
B gives a definite value hence sufficient.
