Hi all,
Though I feel I have a pretty good grasp of the two programs to which I was accepted, it never hurts to gain more insight. I feel a bit stuck between Sloan and Yale SOM. What are your thoughts?
About me:
-Strong quant background (though not of a STEM background, I feel comfortable with quant)
-Working in tech now, probably looking to stay in tech
-Would like to be in the Bay Area for internship & post-MBA
-I would PREFER non-disclosure of grades
-Definite people person, I need people with whom I can connect
-I'm also interested in nonprofit/social impact
-Would like tons of global opportunities and personal leadership development while an MBA student
-I prefer to be in a major city
Help!!
Thanks in advance.
Congrats!!! Both fantastic choices.
First, watch the TED talk about making hard choices. Its called "how to make hard choices" given by Ruth Chang. You can search for it on google I highly recommend it, it will give you a new perspective on how to decide between two hard choices. (I won't link.. maybe rules against it on this forum) But it is going to guide you in how you think when choosing between 2 things.
If I were you I would choose MIT. However, I wouldn't necessary think that choosing Yale is a bad or even a worse decision.
The only reason why I voted for MIT is because you specified that you wanted to stay in TECH. The second best place to be for a MBA for TECH is MIT, arguably Stanford is #1.
This is why many others have and will tell you as a 'third person' to go to MIT. It will, theoretically, give you the best chances of succeeding in tech. You will be surrounded by great engineers in other master's program and have access to the GREAT MIT facilities that you could perhaps get involved in.
MIT is ranked higher, it is in the M-7 list for poets and quants so even without the Tech specification MIT is a better choice. It will give you 'better' access to recruiters. Not to mention being surrounded by students, all of whom could have gotten in to Yale, but decided to attend MIT. If you go to Yale, you will be with students who may have gotten into MIT but also could not have gotten in. AKA less 'stellar' students.
However, having said this, I think you should visit the schools and go to the school that gives you the best feel.
Everyone who is logical will tell you to go MIT. If they tell you to go to Yale, they are not thinking logically. However, once you visit the school and have an understanding of what each school stands for you may be inclined to go to Yale, and if that is the case for you* Yale is a better choice.
Going to a school just because it is ranked higher is not the best way to decide on the MBA.
One thing you should do is contact each school and BS 'I really want to attend Yale, but I would like some scholarship because I was admitted to MIT and it will make me sway my decision' and vice versa for MIT and send an email to both schools. Who knows maybe one school will give you some scholarship to protect their yield.
Kudos!/
