Life expectancy is defined by the formula 2SB/G, where S = shoe size, B = average monthly electric bill in dollars, and G = GMAT score. If Melvin's GMAT score is twice his monthly electric bill, and his life expectancy is 50, what is his shoe size?

A. 25
B. 30
C. 35
D. 40
E. 50

Kudos for a correct solution.

Given: Life expectancy, L = 2SB/G

S=?

Rearranging the given expression for calculating S

i.e. S = LG/2B = (50)*(2*B) / 2*B [Because GMAT Score, G = (2*B)]

i.e. S = 50

G=2B(given)
Life expectancy=2SB/G=2SB/2B=S
S=50

E is correct answer

G = 2B and Life expectancy(L) = 50

L=2SB/G -> 50 = 2SB/2B --> S=50

MANHATTAN GMAT OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

Substitute 2B for G in the formula. Note that the term 2B appears in both the numerator and denominator, so they cancel out.

2SB/2B = 50
S = 50.

Since G = 2B, we can create the equation:

50 = 2SB/(2B)

50 = S
