Thank you everyone who attended our recent Live Q&A with James Scales - MBA Admissions Coordinator at JBS (Cambridge). Those who could not attend this event note that there are two more sessions scheduled with JBS team. Check out the event calendar posted in above posts.

I am posting here select questions and their answers by James. Those who want to read full chat transcript can download the same from the bottom of the post. Good luck!!

Narenn: Is any advantage in applying in R1 or R2 compared to other application rounds?

Cambridge_James: the Admissions Committee will treat all applications in the same way, regardless of which round they apply in. However, there is naturally an advantage in applying earlier if candidates wish to secure places at their preferred colleges and it is also worth bearing in mind that some scholarships have earlier deadlines.

Sri740: Is prior international exposure a must for applying to JBS? How else can I show int'l motivation?

Cambridge_James: Prior international exposure is a plus but not an essential component. You may find the following blog useful: https://insight.jbs.cam.ac.uk/2015/how-c ... a-profile/

Sri740: Can I apply if I already have an MBA? Does it strengthen / weaken my application?

Cambridge_James: You are more than welcome to apply if you already hold an MBA. However, you would be expected to outline what you believe you would gain by undertaking an additional MBA within the context of your career trajectory.

nitishgera: How is the entrepreneurship environment at JBS. Specifically, does JBS have specialized startup incubators to encourage new businesses?

Cambridge_James: The programme has a strong offering in entrepreneurship. You will find further details through this link: https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/programmes/mba ... eneurship/

sajib2126: How do JBS view MBA candidates who are academician?

Cambridge_James: The Admissions Committee welcomes candidates from a wide range of backgrounds. It is, however, business focused and so you would need to demonstrate a level of business acumen.

@MalikaiTLP: How important is the undergraduate GPA in JBS' selection consideration?

Cambridge_James: The course requirement is that students should normally have the equivalent of a 1st or 2.1 under the British system (or GPA of at least 3.3 under the US system) at undergraduate level or that students have come in the top 25% of their class at undergraduate level. However, the Admissions Committee will also look for evidence of necessary academic ability elsewhere in your application - for example a strong GMAT score. By way of reference, the average GMAT score of the current class is 680-690.

Narenn: James, can you comment on the Employment process of the school? What support do students get from Career Services dept, peers, and alumni?

Cambridge_James: We a have a dedicated careers service, whose members work hard to provide students with the support they need to realize their career goals. The following link provides further information about the nature of the services on offer: https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/programmes/mba/careers/

JBSaspirant: Which student clubs or groups are in Judge? What social and philanthropic opportunities and opportunities to get involved in leadership roles one can get in these groups?

Cambridge_James: The following link addresses your query: https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/programmes/mba ... rks-treks/ You are also welcome to add your own clubs and societies! As well as this, you can tap into the wider university community, details of which are outlined here: https://www.societies.cam.ac.uk/

nitishgera: James, the website says that for the interview, if shortlisted "We do, however, strongly prefer candidates to visit us in Cambridge". Does it weigh against my application if I choose to interview in my own country?

Cambridge_James: A telephone interview will not undermine your chances. But you would of course have greater scope to assess the programme and environment of the business school if you attended in person.

Guest46363: After the course completion for international students will there be a buffer time to secure jobs before they are deported back to their respective countries?

Cambridge_James: The course lasts 12 months but structured teaching finishes after 9 months. This means students have a 3-month bridging period to do what they feel will help them (for instance, organize internships or attend a range of skills courses at the School) to maximize their employment prospects.

Narenn: James, Is there a way for applicants to connect with current JBS students to learn about their classroom experiences, community, and culture at Cambridge?

Cambridge_James: once candidates receive offers, we are able to put them in touch with alumni and current students. However, due to the sheer weight of interest in the programme, this is not feasible prior to candidates receiving offers. However, we hold plenty of events for prospective students and there are, of course, opportunities to connect with alumni through social media

Dear Applicants,

Thank you for attending live q&a with Cambridge admission team member yesterday. For those who could not attend this event, here is collection of important question/answers and chat transcript.

"The key elements of the application that we are looking for are to understand why you want to study for an MBA, can you evidence that you will be able to manage the course and finally what are you going to bring to the class - experience, insights, knowledge to share. Learning on the MBA is both from your profs but also your classmates." - Charlotte Russell, MBA Admissions Coordinator at Cambridge (Judge)

natisolanog: Regarding Application: How many recommendations should I submit? Will my references be required to do more than create a reference letter?
Narenn: Continuing natisolanog's question, what if one don't get recommendation from a current direct supervisor? A recommendation letter from previous employer would work?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Thank you for your question. We only require one recommendation letter - it should be from a supervisor or line manager. If you wish, there is space to submit a second letter of reference but this is optional and we would only advise you do this if you feel it would add to your application. For the reference letter, we provide guidance on the questions that we would like addressed but your referee is free to write this as an essay or a letter - however they prefer.
In answer to Narenn, we are happy to accept a recommendation from a former employer. Please choose a referee who knows you well and can speak about you in depth with specific examples of your strengths and weaknesses.

natisolanog: Are there any courses relating specifically to family businesses? I have researched classes offered on your website but have not seen any reference to emphasis on family business.

Cambridge_Charlotte: We often have candidates in our class who are members of family businesses. In terms of specific courses, we don't currently have specialist electives but all classes can be discussed and applied to that context.

Solarus: How does Judge feel about applicants re-applying if they are unsuccessful in the previous year?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Candidates are welcome to re-apply in a new admissions year however they would need to evidence a change in their profile - otherwise the decision is likely to be the same. For example, an increase in prof. experience with a promotion or a higher GMAT score

Narenn: At present the biggest worry of international applicants is new UK work rules. How much time international applicants generally get after graduation to find jobs in UK / Europe? Can they apply for a Visa after graduating?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Changes to UK work rules have caused confusion but please be reassured that it is still possible to work in the UK after graduation. Graduates will have four months after the programme ends (until end of January) when they finish in September to secure a visa. The UK actually remains one of the highest post-MBA destinations too.

mib_5cv864: Regarding the waiver for English language test for students who have studied at a degree level at an institution where English is the medium of instruction, is it a negative factor if you go for this option instead of a standardized test?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello, for the purposes of your MBA application form, it is fine to request this waiver and with the reason you have explained we would have no concerns. However, please be aware that if you require a visa to study in the UK, you might need to submit a recognized language certificate to the UK Government for your visa. We can advise you further on this if you are made an offer to join the programme.

natisolanog: Regarding summer activities, I have seen information of an “Entrepreneurship Boot Camp”. What does this program consist of?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Cambridge is very strong for Entrepreneurship as you may know - we are the Silicon Valley of Europe. Regarding Summer Activities there is usually an option for candidates interested in this field but I cannot confirm if the Bootcamp will be running next year. In any case, there are still lots of clubs, competitions and activities through our Centre. If you look on our website you will see lots of links to Entrepreneurial options within the programme.

Ergenekon: What is the required toefl or IELTS score?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello Ergen, to answer your question we are looking for a TOEFL of 110 with no section below 25. For IELTS it would be 7.5, with no element below 7.0

Narenn: Charlotte, can you tell us about scholarships and other financial assistance provided to students? Typically how much of admissions cost they cover? Also does JBS have tie up with any British banks to provide students with student loans?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Regarding the funding question, there are lots of scholarships on our website so please do check there for your eligibility. Otherwise we are also part of the Prodigy Finance loan programme. Prodigy is open to all students who have been made an offer to join the Cambridge MBA programme.

Ergenekon: Charlotte, what kind of clubs are there in Judge related to healthcare? And in overall how the school helps candidates who see their future in helalthcare industry?

Cambridge_Charlotte: In terms of clubs, the school has many different special interest groups - there is one for healthcare. We also have groups for Finance, Entrepreneurship, Consulting, Women Leaders, Social Innovation and more..
For candidates interested in these different areas, I would encourage them to be become actively involved in the club. Many hold speaker events, alumni networking sessions, industry panel discussions or conferences - this kind of thing.

Hansen: Hi Charlotte, my question is that if my GPA is substantially less than 3.3 minimum required, but with a strong GMAT, will I have chances of admission?

Cambridge_Charlotte: please be reassured that we always look at the full application and would never reject a candidate based on GPA or the School they attended. However, you will need to evidence your academic ability if you have a below requirement GPA - a strong GMAT would be essential in this case.

natisolanog: Regarding the visit to schools. As international students, can the fact that we may not visit the school before applying affects our application profile?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Don't worry if you are not able to visit the School before you submit your application - we don't place any weight on this fact. I would definitely recommend that you try to attend our interview day on campus though if you are invited as it is a good way to understand more about the programme and meet other classmates.

Ergenekon: How the Judge conducts interviews? And by whom? alumni or adcom?

Cambridge_Charlotte: All interviews are conducted by faculty members - either at our on campus day or by telephone/Skype. We NEVER use alumni or other staff so the process is fair and consistent.

Ergenekon: I have been in mandatory military service for 1 year. Should I include it as a work experience? And how does adcom evaluate it compared to candidates with military background?

Cambridge_Charlotte: When compiling your CV, please do mention military service so there are no gaps however we understand that it is not a "career" in the same way as someone who has chosen a military career. Certainly if you have achievements from that time, it is worth mentioning them.

natisolanog: Does the school help in reaching out to students or alumni in our home country? Colombia for example? How can I find students / Alumni an contact them to receive feedback and advise?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Regarding alumni, we are happy to connect candidates with local alumni once they have submitted an application and are progressing through our application process. If you are looking to connect with students I would also recommend using tools like LinkedIn.

Dear Applicants,

Thank you for attending live Q&A with Cambridge admission team member on Tuesday. For those who could not attend this event, here is collection of important question/answers and chat transcript.

"Honestly, there is no right type of candidate that we are looking for. We want you to use the application to explain about your profile and how the Cambridge MBA will help you to achieve your goals. The main elements that we look for in a strong application would be….
1. Solid academic ability (the Cambridge MBA is a fast paced one year programme so we have to be sure that you will manage the workload)
2. Interesting professional experience / career progression (there is lots of group work on the Cambridge MBA so we need to see that you have interesting perspectives to add to the class discussions)
3. And finally how the Cambridge MBA is going to help you. (Use the Career essay to really explain how our programme is going to be the right option for you and help you with that next step)."
- Charlotte Russell, MBA Admissions Coordinator at Cambridge (Judge)

Solarus: Hi Charlotte, thank you for doing this today. On the CV template available on the application form, it doesn't clearly state where volunteer experience may fit in. Should I put this under my work experience in the same format?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello Solarus, great to hear that you have volunteer experience to add to your profile. Where you place it in your application will probably depend on how serious the volunteering was. In most cases I would put it under your Hobbies and Extra curricula interests. If the volunteer experience is relevant to your future goals, please make sure that you mention it in your career essay too though - to really highlight it.

@Tapis: In some schools, there might be a disadvantage for candidates who have exceeded a certain age to apply for the MBA programme. Is this the same for Judge?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello Tapis, thanks for joining us today. There is no upper age limit but our class tends to range from about 25 yrs old to 45 yrs old. We have taken students with more work experience who are older - it really depends on your motivations for the MBA. Many older candidates don't want to study full-time and prefer to opt for a EMBA or Part-time programme. Don't let this put you off though - if a full-time programme is right for you then use the Career essay to explain why.

ankitm: Hi Charlotte , for the essay questions especially" the spectacular failure " one , is it ok if a candidate is exceeding the same by 20/30 words or should it strictly be under 200 words ?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello AnkitM, don't worry we can give you a bit of flexibility with the word count on essays. An extra 20/30 words is fine - we just don't want an additional 200

dgangwar18: What are the criteria Cambridge looks for in an application?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Honestly, there is no right type of candidate that we are looking for.
(Use the Career essay to really explain how our programme is going to be the right option for you and help you with that next step)

ankitm: The other question in regard with the GPA . The website mentions 3.3 as the criteria. My educational institutes (Grad, Post grad) have all followed a percentage system. Should I keep it as percentage in my application as I am not sure on the conversions?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Please keep all your marks in their original format and report them as the original %. We have many international candidates so are familiar with different marking systems.

@PrasanthNalle: what is the minimal Gmat score expected with 5yrs of work experience?

Cambridge_Charlotte: PrasanthNalle our average GMAT is around 690 and we would expect a strong candidate to score somewhere in the region of 640 - 740.

jaspreets: I have a question about financing the study. What MBA financing options are available to students and how long it would take to pay off the amount, and how would be the job market after MBA so that loan payment could be taken care of?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello Jaspreets, I think you have the million dollar question! Many candidates fund their MBA through a mixture of personal savings, loans and possibly a scholarship so it's not unusual to need some financial assistance.
Please take a look at our scholarships/loans page as there are too many options to discuss but we work with Prodigy Finance to provide loans to MBA students and this might be a good option for you if you need to borrow a significant amount
Link for funding - https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/programmes/mba ... s-funding/
Most candidates would be looking to pay back their loans within about 3 years but much depends on where you are working and the sector.

Narenn: Charlotte, How good is Cambridge MBA program for those who want to go in Investment Banking after MBAr? Can you name a few investment banks that recruit at JBS?

Cambridge_Charlotte: We have a number of companies that will come on campus during the year. Usually we don't have Investment Banks because they recruit in a different way, but we do have Consulting firms and lots of Industry clients such as BP, Google, Amazon for example.

Solarus: What is the procedure for uploading transcripts? Are we allowed to simply scan an official copy for immediate use? Or is there an additional process involved?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Solarus, when you are completing your application you can just scan an official copy. If you are then invited to interview, you need to bring or post the official copy to us.

ankitm: From a consulting standpoint I see Strategy Consulting firms such as BCG , MCkinsey and other firms list Cambridge university as a priority campus. Does it mean that they conduct events at Judge Business School as well?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Yes AnkitM, many of the Consulting firms you mention will hold on campus events. These might be through our dedicated Careers Team or they might be more alumni led, informal sessions that are organized by the student clubs. Don't forget, your classmates will also be coming from many of these backgrounds and are a valuable networking and preparation resource.

Chatpro: Charlotte can you shed some light on Cambridge's admission process? i.e. What happens in background from submitting an application to getting an interview invite (or denial without interview )

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello Chatpro, so we run a staged admissions process and will review all applications together after each round. Readers will look through your full application and if we feel you would be a good fit with our programme then you would be invited to interview. No offers are made without a candidate being interviewed first. A quick point to highlight on our process, we only use MBA teaching faculty to conduct our interviews, either on campus or via phone

Solarus: Is a GMAT score that is 10-20 points higher than the class mean and a sharp upwards trend in senior year grades (for a difficult major) be sufficient to alleviate concerns over a low cumulative GPA?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Thanks Solarus, it sounds like your academic ability would be demonstrated fine then. If there is a weak area on your undergrad transcript, you could also use the "Additional information" section on the application to explain more fully

Prasanth: What is the strength of alumni network and how it helps us to get placed?

Cambridge_Charlotte: With the Cambridge MBA you have two alumni networks. You will have a solid, 150-160 MBA class network but in addition you also have the wider university and college network.
The alumni network is great in terms of giving you informal information about different sectors and also an insight in to the working culture and culture in general at the company. I would encourage all candidates to look at our alumni profiles to learn more about the post-MBA career outcomes of students - https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/programmes/mba ... es/energy/

@Rafid: How the experience of an exchange studentship under Erasmus Mundus increase a candidate chances to get selected for the program?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello Rafid, we often see that applicants have completed an exchange as part of their undergrad experience and this is great to show your global outlook. The exchange in itself doesn't guarantee you a place on the course but use the career essay to bring out how it has influenced you or what you gained from it. Many candidates that complete an exchange in Europe want to come back for their MBA because they enjoyed the experience so much!

Narenn: Charlotte, Any idea what percentage of applicants generally get interview invites and how many of those interviewed get final offers? I just need rough estimate.

Cambridge_Charlotte: Just a quick comment on application numbers and interview numbers, we don't operate any quotas so please submit your application when you feel it is at its strongest. Typically we would invite to interview about half the applicants in each round but this is not exact and really depends on the quality. Ultimately we have a small class (approx. 160) compared to many schools so the application stage is competitive

Prajat: I came to know that the University prefers candidates who can visit the campus for interview. Does it reduce the chances of admissions for those who can't?

Cambridge_Charlotte: Hello Prajat, please be reassured that a visit to campus is not necessary and does not have any impact on your admissions decision. We have such an international class that for many students it is simply not practical for them to visit. However, I would really encourage you to try and come to campus if you are invited to interview. This doesn't increase your chances but it will allow you to meet our team and some of the other applicants who are going to be your possible future classmates!

Solarus: How diverse is college selection at Cambridge? The College system is a very interesting aspect of the whole package and seems very unique and fulfilling. (I should clarify that by "diverse" I mean, are a large number of colleges open to MBA applicants, or is it more streamlined than say an undergrad?)

Cambridge_Charlotte: There are 31 colleges at Cambridge and you are right, they really add another aspect to your MBA experience. It's a great way to meet students and faculty from other departments. Don't worry about the College application process at this time; we will work with you once you have an offer to secure membership. In terms of being accepted at all 31 Colleges, there are three that only accept women and some others that are more undergrad focused but otherwise you still have a really broad "choice"
