= 40x35 - 20x20= 1000 square feet

Forget conventional ways of solving math questions. In PS, IVY approach is the easiest and quickest way to find the answer.




A flat patio was built alongside a house as shown in the figure above. If all angles shown are right angles, what is the area of the patio in square feet?
(A) 800
(B) 875
(C) 1,000
(D) 1,100
(E) 1,125



Let the width of the overlapped rectangle be x feet and the length be y feet.
Then x= 40-20= 20 feet, y= 35-15 = 20 feet.
So the area of the overlapped rectangle is 400= 20 * 20 square feet.
The area of patio is, therefore, 40*35 – 400 = 1400-400 = 1000 square feet.
The answer is (C).

Total area of patio, 40*35=1400
Overlap part:
40-20=20
35-15=20
So, 20*20=400
So, the area of patio after removing house part=1400-400=1100.
So, the correct answer is D

Then how can we multiply Individual Areas 20x15 and 20x35??

Hey,

It is nowhere mentioned in the question that the Patio is a square.

I guess you must have got confused with the following line - "what is the area of the patio in square feet?"

This simply means that we need to find the area of the patio and the unit of the area is \((feet)^2\) and that will happen only when we express each of the sides of the patio in term of feet and not some other measurement like meters, centimeters etc. :)

patio has dimension 40*35
therefore area=1400
why the overlapped area has to subtracted from it?
even though the question asks what is area of patio

Area of the patio (including the part overlapped by the house) = L*W = 35*40 = 1400

Now, the area (square) of the overlapped part = side*side = 20*20 = 400

Area of the patio = 1400-400 = 1000

Answer is option C.

Total area of patio, 40*35=1400
Overlap part:
40-20=20
35-15=20
So, 20*20=400
So, the area of patio after removing house part=1400-400=1100.
So, the correct answer is D


I think there is calculation error. its 1400 - 400 = 1000 option D

There is another way to solve this question !


as mentioned in the question all the angles in the patio are right angles we can divide the patio into two right angle triangles.



area of triangle 1 = 1/2 * 40* 35 = 700

area of triangle 2 = 700 - (20*20) ie: the area of the square that comes into the house = 300

total area of patio = triangle 1 + triangle 2 = 1000

answer choice C

Since the patio, if not covered by the house would have been rectangular,
The area of the patio then would have been 40*35 = 1400 sqft

Now the length of house covering the patio = 40 - 20 = 20ft
The breadth of the same = 35 - 15 = 20ft

Thus, the area of the patio covered with house = 20*20 = 400 sqft

Thus, the area of the patio = 1400 - 400 sqft = 1,000 sqft.

Thus, the correct option is C.
