QUANT 4-PACK SERIES Data Sufficiency Pack 4 Question 3 On a number line...

On a number line, the distance from point A to zero is greater than the distance from point B to zero. Does point C lie between points A and B on the number line?

1) ABC > 0
2) |A| > |B| > |C|

Hi All,

From the first sentence, we're told that A is FARTHER from 0 on a number line than B is from 0. This essentially means that |A| > |B|. It's possible that these 2 variables are both positive, both negative or one of each. We're asked if point C falls between these two points on the number line. This is a YES/NO question. We can solve it by TESTing VALUES or using Number Properties.

1) ABC > 0

IF....
A = 5
B = 3
C = 4
Then the answer to the question is YES.

IF....
A = 5
B = 3
C = 2
Then the answer to the question is NO.
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

2) |A| > |B| > |C|

IF....
A = 5
B = -3
C = 2
Then the answer to the question is YES.

IF....
A = 5
B = 3
C = 2
Then the answer to the question is NO.
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Combined, we know...
ABC > 0
|A| > |B| > |C|

IF....
A = 5
B = -3
C = -2
Then the answer to the question is YES.

IF....
A = 5
B = 3
C = 2
Then the answer to the question is NO.
Combined, INSUFFICIENT

Final Answer:
