Hi Jon, please provide your opinion of my profile.
Gmat : 720 (Q47/V42/IR-4/AWA-5.5)
Post MBA goal : To get into strategic consulting.. if not MBB then atleast Deloitte etc. Hence, i would consider only schools that place a significant number of students into consulting.
I plan to apply in R1 of the next admission session. And also, i would need a considerable scholarship to be able to attend an us b school.
Profile:
Indian/Male/IT
(Please don't stop reading!!!)
I'm 27 and I have around 5 years of total industry experience.
I have worked in Infosys for 3.5 years (1 promotion) and then i have been working for Genpact Capital Markets ( I work out of my client site : Goldman Sachs). My formal designation is "Technical Consultant" but the work i do is mostly coding. Almost all of the clients i have worked for are in the finance domain. I am the youngest person in my present team
. In my previous firm, i used to supervise 3 of my juniors. I have no experience of working outside of my native country.
I have done a fair bit of volunteer work (Mentoring under privileged student, flood relief etc.) but it was all part of my organisation's CSR activities. I played football for the Infosys team and captained the college football team.. not sure if it counts for anything. I have also organized events and tournaments for my organisation.
I secured 68% in B.E. electronics but i finished my course in 5 years. I had to drop a year as i had to tend to some medical emergencies in my family and could not appear for my exam. (To clarify : i did NOT fail). I completed a 3 month course in IT during the time i couldn't attend college.
Given the considerable constraints in my profile...
I plan to apply to the top 15-25 schools (kelley/olin/goizueta).
Oh and i will also try to get my GMAT score to somewhere around 740. And i know un poco espanyol (level A2).. again not sure if this adds any weight to my profile.
Question 1) Can i expect a scholarship from 15-25 schools?
Question 2) Are the schools i mentioned target schools for Deloitte\PWC etc?
Question 3) Should i apply to higher ranked schools (Kenan-Flagler\Duke) or am i being too hopeful?
Also, i would really appreciate any other tips to improve my profile in the next 7-8 months.
Thanks in advance Jon.
Hello there!
Don't you worry, I read all the way to the end! Even if you are Indian and male and tech!
Soo, basically the short of it is that you have a pretty good understanding of your profile and your chances. I think applying in the 10-30 range is about fair for you. I will answer your specific questions here below, but honestly, the main thing is: don't BORE the ADCOM!!!!!
I'm totally serious. I mean, from the outside, your profile is a very common one. so what's our task???? to NOT let it be common. To make it SHINE with uniqueness. Otherwise you might get lost in the shuffle.
On to your questions!
Question 1) Can i expect a scholarship from 15-25 schools?
Probably not. Or a small one. This is your "competitive range"
Question 2) Are the schools i mentioned target schools for Deloitte\PWC etc?
That's about right. But do check with each school on an individual level.
Question 3) Should i apply to higher ranked schools (Kenan-Flagler\Duke) or am i being too hopeful
Kenan-Flagler can be a good hopeful school. Duke will likely be out of range
all in all, not too bad!
Best,
JF
