Why is D wrong?
safety standards are being maintained definitely evaluating claim made by the opposition

The only possible explanation that I can think for option D "The effectiveness of the regulatory authority in ensuring that safety standards are being maintained." to be wrong is that it doesn't talk about the effectiveness being different in pre-privatization period.

So for both the answers (highly effective or not effective at all) we have the same answer, hence it cannot be the answer.

I am not sure if I am able to pen down my thoughts correctly but I hope it makes sense. Kindly correct me if I am wrong.

even if it doesn't, from being maintained one can infer that safety standards has to continue, no?

So if it was safety standards are being maintained Post Privatization then it'd be correct. I hope you get the difference, as we don't have a time-frame for this particular claim.

A-Wrong because absolute increase in the number of flights will not determine the rate of mishaps.
B-Wrong because the causes of accidents and effectiveness in implementation of safety guards will not help us determine whether air travel has become more or less safe.
D-Same reason as B.
E-Passage is talking about mishaps not about the effects of mishaps.

Re: The opposition has strongly criticized the government [#permalink]
Quote:
The opposition has strongly criticized the
government for opening up the airline sector to
private players. It contends that since the
privatization 10 years ago, safety of the air travel
has dropped drastically, pointing out the number of
airline accidents in the 10 years post-privatization
is more than twice the number of accidents in the
10 years preceding privatization. Which of the
following information is most important in evaluating
the correctness of the claim made by the
opposition?
(a) The increase in the total number of flights post-
privatization.
(b) The major causes of airline accidents before and
after privatization.
(c) The percentage change in the total number of
flights post-privatization.
(d) The effectiveness of the regulatory authority in
ensuring that safety standards are being
maintained.
(e) The increase in the number of deaths in airline
accidents post-privatization.

Dubious premise will take this argument down.
Accidents more than doubled. true.
but did flight more than double as well?
If flight more than doubled, or even tripled, then it's just a normal all-things-being-equal thing.
D
B is a distractor, a Chimera, mikemcgarry would say.
I love this l Qs

It is between A and C. I see no difference in both the choice. Both can help in evaluating the conclusion.

Experts opinion please.

Though I agree with C, how can we completely eliminate A?

Lets say accidents post privatization was 4 for 100 flights - 4/100

Which of the following information is most important in evaluating the correctness of the claim made by the opposition?

(a) The increase in the total number of flights post-privatization.

(From the stem - the number of airline accidents in the 10 years post-privatization is more than twice the number of accidents in the 10 years preceding privatization.)

No increase in total number of flights but accidents increased > 2x --> 10 for 100 flights - 10/100 - Yes post-privatization became unsafe

Huge Increase in total number of flights - 1000 - Accidents increased > 2x ---> 10 for 1000 flights - It actually reduced post prvt.

Sorry to rain on everybody's parade here, but this question is deeply flawed. Even under the best of circumstances, it's incredibly difficult for test-prep companies to copy the style of the GMAT. And in this case, whoever wrote the passage seems to struggle with English grammar, which makes me think that it's from a particularly unreliable source.

And I suppose that you could defend either (A) or (C) -- but again, this question is a mess, so don't lose any sleep over it.

IMO both A and C are correct . Lol percentage increase in total is same as increase in total number of flights.

Only number of increase in flights does not give informaion that we need. We should know number of flights before the privatization

Changing percentage is exactly what we need because it relates to number before privatization

I have made a mistake here. But if to be more attentive, it may be seen that of course C is better than A.

For example there was 1000 flights before and 1100 after. And the number of accidents was 5 before and 10 after. Sure in this case the claim of opposition is true.
And if there were 1000 flights before and 5000 after. 5 vs 10. In this case we can see that the opposition is wrong.

So if we know the percentage change in number of flightsm we can evaluate the correctness of opposition's claim.
If it is less than 100%, the opposition is right, if it is more than 100%, the opposition is wrong.
It is option C.

If we do not know the percentage, we can not evaluate the correctness of this claim.
Option A. Let the increase be 1000 flights. But what is the initial number of flights?
If it were less than 1000, the opposition would be wrong. Otherwise - right.

I agree with Temurkhon here,

For A, we don't just need the increase no., we also need the original no. from which we can compare this increase.
for example, if we had 100 flights originally but this no. has increased by 20, we need to compare this 20 with 100 to understand that this % changes is actually 20%.
if we just had increased flights = 20, we can't determine whether this increase if high or low unless we know if the original no. of flights was let's say 50 or was it 100.

C clearly tells us the % and thus is the correct answer.

Hope this helps!
