In the accounting branch of a commercial institute, the percentage of male and female workers is 48% and 52% respectively. In this branch, 40% of males and 20% of females are age 25 or older. If one of the workers is selected at random, what is the probability that the worker is under 25 years old?

(A) 0.30
(B) 0.25
(C) 0.45
(D) 0.70
(E) 0.90

Probability of selecting the worker is under 25 years old = 352/500 ~ 0.70

Hence the correct answer will be (D)

Re: In the accounting branch of a commercial institute, the percentage of [#permalink]
As the Answer choices are well spread between 0 to 1:

A rough approach may be used -
~ 50% males and 50% females
Probability of Age < 25 = 1 - 40% of 50% for males and 20% of 50% for females = 1-0.3 = 0.7

Answer= (D)

In the accounting branch of a commercial institute, the percentage of [#permalink]
since none of the answer choice is close
----
let the total be 100
no of males in the branch = 48% =48
no of females = 52

60% males are younger than 25 = ~29
80 % of the females are younger than 25 = ~41
total younger than 25 = ~70
p(y25) =0.70
