I totally agree with you. But, in GMAT, you have to pick among the given choices and not look for the best possible answer. Going by that mantra, I looked for the best possible answer. :)

Decided is a subjunctive verb and hence will be followed by 'that'
So, we can eliminate C, D and E.

Options left:

(A) that the woman’s ex-husband remained indebted to her for the property

(B) that the woman’s ex-husband remained indebted to her because of the property

Now, we have to decide between 'for' and 'because':

The distinction between the two, 'for' and 'because', is just about lost to native speakers.

Let us understand from examples:

1. She was crying, for her mother was seriously ill.
and
2. She was crying because her mother was seriously ill.

The use of 'because' introduces the subordinate clause that gives the reason she was crying.

In contrast, 'for' is used as a coordinating conjunction to stress that both pieces of information are of equal importance:
'she was crying' ' and 'the mother was seriously ill'. In (2), the 'because' version, it is 'she was crying' which is stressed, of major importance, and the reason why is then added on.

"I trust him, for he is an honourable man." stresses that 'I trust him" and separately, quite apart from whether I happen to trust him or not, 'this is an honourable man.'

To say, "I trust him because he is an honourable man" indicates that 'I trust him" and the 'because' clause is subordinate to that, merely explaining the basis for my 'trust'.

As we understand from above examples, we should have 'for' in the right answer.

Hence, answer should be A.

With subjunctive we use base form of verb
the judge decided that the woman’s ex-husband remained indebted
remained is a problem here. It should read remain.
I do not agree with OA. its between A and C while both are wrong

I don't think "DECIDE" is subjunctive. this is why "remained" is used instead of "remain". for quick reference:
https://gmatclub.com/forum/subjunctive-and-use-of-that-with-simple-verb-form-79606.html#p600516

and it is not certain that we require "that" after decide. see the following sentences:
she decided that she liked him
she had decided on her plan of action
the courts decided in favour of the New York claimants

we should be clear of why A is 100% correct. please let me know if you find otherwise.

When compared with A & the authors intent, B changes the meaning?

I first have to complain about people using anything but official guide questions but leaving that aside. Eliminate all but A and B because the idiom is decide that. Indebted for instead of indebted because. Think about it this way if because was correct it would be indebted to her because he stole her property. We would need a verb after because. Hope this helps!

In a lengthy court battle, the judge decided that the woman’s ex-husband remained indebted to her for the property he stole when he vacated their home.

(A) that the woman’s ex-husband remained indebted to her for the property

(B) that the woman’s ex-husband remained indebted to her because of the property

(C) the woman’s ex-husband to remain indebted to her for the property

(D) on the woman’s ex-husband who remained indebted to her for the property because

(E) on the remaining debt that the woman’s ex-husband had for the property------ changes the meaning

Decided can take "on" and "that" . Also Decided is in PAST so the whole sentence needs to be in PAST.

Decided that X for Y.

A. that the woman???s ex-husband remained indebted to her for the property

How can A be the correct answer? IMO "remained" is an absolute disaster.
