We are no where given that Sleepy people means not interested.

So, Since total = 120.

Present = 108

Not Interested = 22.

So, interested = 86 , which is greater than 70% of the attendees. Hence, Answer should be A.

You cannot assume it on your own unless its explicitly stated. This is the main reason this question has included that information just to make people confused.

In a meeting 10% of the people were absent. Among the present, 20% were not interested and 30% were sleepy. If the number of people invited for the meeting was 120, what is the number of people who were interested.

a> 74
b> 64
c> 54
d> 44
e> 41

I do not have answer to this question. What is the correct answer?

Not a 700 level Q..
Only 90% are present..
20% of these are not interested, so remaining 80% are interested..
So (80*90/100)% or 72% are interested..
72% of 120 ...almost 86%

Agreed.

Need to follow basic rule of "No Assumptions"

So, you and Chetan got 86, ok. Lets assume that "sleepy" does not mean "not interested".

So why is the answer A after that?

The answers are described badly imo.

I think you want to express that 86 > 64 so C might also be a possible answer. Anyways, answer A most accurately described the number of interested people because 74 is the closest option to 86.

I can accept it. But if GMAT does so, it is awful
