I have a random inability to leave voicemails and these tapped right into that weakness.

The below is my reaction to my own answers as I heard them coming out of my mouth.

Shockingly, did not help me. I have a random inability to leave voicemails and this tapped right into that weakness.

Random question: do international students in the class tend to have higher or lower GMAT scores than the school mean and median, or is it equally distributed among international vs. domestic? Specifically for Indian and Chinese applicants. Thanks.

I think it is clear that Indian/Chinese admits have an average GMAT that is above the class average. The thing I am unclear on is if other overrepresented groups (white Americans specifically) have average GMAT scores above the mean and median.

FROM Kellogg MBA Blog: How I built and scaled my tech startup at Kellogg
https://kelloggmbastudents.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/jared_scharen-photo.jpg?w=314&h=335
“Jared, are you still alive?”

My classmates often ask me this question in this jest because I am the typical Kellogg School student entrepreneur: an entrepreneur that eats, sleeps and breathes his startup, while still juggling the rigors of Kellogg’s academics and extracurriculars.

Being an entrepreneur at Kellogg is a challenging journey that many people will never truly understand, but at the same time, it is a journey that can be incredibly rewarding if done right.

I am the CEO of eRetirements, a tech startup that provides user-friendly, personalized retirement location information for soon-to-be retirees.

The inspiration for my startup came in March 2015 when my parents called me to complain about their “dream” retirement location. When my friends asked me what resources my parents used to select their location, I explained that they didn’t use any.

When I spoke with other retirees, I learned that a comprehensive resource for retirement location planning did not exist. I knew then that I had to solve this problem by creating eRetirements, an online tool that that offers tailored relocation recommendations for retirees.

When I arrived at Kellogg in Fall 2015, eRetirements was on its way with a prototype website and preliminary market research. In order to officially launch eRetirements, I decided to seek as much advice and assistance as possible from Professors Linda Darragh, Carter Cast, and Troy Henikoff. All of these professors are seasoned entrepreneurs who are genuinely interested in helping students like me launch successful startups.

Besides asking for advice from the incredible Kellogg Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative (KIEI) faculty, I also took advantage of Kellogg’s robust entrepreneurship and marketing courses. As an individual with no coding experience, Introduction to Software Development was an invaluable course for me. It provided me with an overview and general understanding of coding, which helped me effectively manage my development team.

Entrepreneurial Tools for Digital Marketing equipped me with all types of tricks and strategies to improve our website traffic, and the New Venture series did an incredible job of taking me through the entrepreneurship journey step-by-step. (This series lets students “discover, test and launch” their entrepreneurial endeavors through experiential learning coursework and real-life experiences.)

Additionally, I took advantage of The Garage. The Garage is an incubator on Northwestern’s campus that offers a residency program and even a pre-accelerator. It provides a physical space for students to meet, learn and flesh out their ideas, and it is a phenomenal opportunity to integrate with other entrepreneurs from a variety of disciplines.

Like all things in life, balance is key when it comes to being an entrepreneur at Kellogg. Juggling your personal life, classes and startup commitments is admittedly challenging. However, I believe that the Kellogg community offers a support system that makes all of this juggling possible.

I am happy to report that eRetirements continues to grow everyday; we have had nearly 2,000 users sign up thus far, and we recently sold our first advertising contracts. I’m excited to see what’s next for eRetirements – and how we will continue to scale with the help of Kellogg’s professors, academics and other unique offerings.

Jared Scharen is a second-year student in Kellogg’s Full-Time Two-Year Program and CEO/Co-Founder of eRetirements.com. He is VP of alumni relations for the eClub, a member of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and actively involved with The Garage. Prior to Kellogg, Jared was a consultant at McKinsey & Co. and spent a year volunteering with TechnoServe in Peru. He received his B.S. in Finance and Economics from Villanova University.

I haven't received anything about interviewing yet. I'm a Chicago area applicant, so I have to do an off-campus interview. The application said it could be 4-6 weeks until I hear about it!

I just did my video essays...those were fun. Ran out of time on every one I think. I like to talk too much!

Guys,
Has the interview calls started rolling in? I was assuming that they'll be out post video-interview deadline.

Well the video essay isn't due yet. You have a week after the application deadline to do it. Also, everyone interviews so not sure what you mean by interview calls?

Fine.

So, we have two interviews. One is video interview and the other is in-person interview. Video interview is a part of the application and everyone has to do it. You have a week to submit it post the application deadline. Right? By interview calls, I mean the in-person interview calls, which I believe is something that not every student who applies get. Am I missing something?

I'm not familiar with how the actual interviews are run. Off-campus interviews don't hear back for 4-6 weeks is all I know. Chicago area applicants don't get the option to interview on campus for whatever reason. I thought that on-campus interviews are scheduled yourself on-line. Yes you're correct about the video interview.

I could be very wrong, but my understanding of Kellogg was everyone (regardless of on or off-campus) will get an interview invite. On the other hand, Tuck only guarantees interviews to those who will travel to campus. The video essay is not related to the interview at all and is merely another a part of your initial application. Could someone else verify or correct this?

I believe you are correct on both counts, on-campus interviews are self-scheduled at the completion of the application form. I also do not believe the video essay is related to or used as a supplement to an interview (in either person-to-person or skype form). I cannot confirm, but suspect the purpose of the video interview is to understand how a person will react in the face of spontaneity, as will be the case in a classroom. Kellogg certainly seems to value a class that is socially adept. Formal interviews can be thoroughly prepared for, essays can be reviewed and polished but the true litmus test is how someone can think on his or her feet and answer a spur of the moment question.

Granted, everyone has good and bad days when it comes to these types of questions so hopefully it isn't a huge factor like the GMAT or your essays, but one that certainly one that could move the needle slightly one way or another.

Perfect.. that's what I think of the video essays as well. Normally, I'd say I'm a coherent speaker who can react to spontaneity, but I was well off my game that day. The nervousness certainly didn't help ha. 'Twas a pretty brutal 3 minutes

Hah, it wasn't easy, that's for sure. I took some extra time between questions just to let my heart stop racing. Fortunately the two "surprise" questions I had relevant and cogent answers for but that didn't mean I wasn't all nerves. Definitely part of the application that keeps you on your toes!
