1) That every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants - We do not need to use "which" once "that" is being used at the start of sentence. You can write the sentence in this format:

Every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks that is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants

2) Clean criminal records of their employees is important to investment banks; hence, a stringent background check are necessary prerequisites for employment - use of plural verb is incorrect.
3) Because they consider it important that all of their employees have a clean criminal record, investment banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check - Only option left with no errors
4) It is of some importance that all investment banks’ workers have clean criminal records which is why many of them undergo stringent background checks - Awkword and wordy. Also use of "them" is ambiguous.
5) The reason that investment banks require background checks of their applicants is because they require clean criminal records of their employees - again, use of "they" is ambiguous.

IMO C. Please correct me if I am wrong.

1]That every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants

Correct

2]Clean criminal records of their employees is important to investment banks; hence, a stringent background check are necessary prerequisites for employment

Check ..are don’t agree. Hence incorrect

3]Because they consider it important that all of their employees have a clean criminal record, investment banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check

“it” has no clear referent. Hence incorrect

4]It is of some importance that all investment banks’ workers have clean criminal records which is why many of them undergo stringent background checks

“It is of some importance that” is wordy. Hence incorrect

5]The reason that investment banks require background checks of their applicants is because they require clean criminal records of their employees

“ the reason” and “because” convey the same meaning. Hence Incorrect.

"Because they consider it important that all of their employees have a clean criminal record, investment banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check"

The problem with the above part of the sentence,IMO, is the idiom “consider”. “consider” cannot be followed by anything.. Even if we think that “it” is a placeholder., “it” will be referring to “that all of their employees”.

So if we remove “it”, the sentence would be “Because they consider that all of their employees….”, which is wrong.

As a rule “consider” cannot be followed by placeholder “it” and “there” .

I hope this helps

jade3, I think you are being a little too strict about the "consider" idiom.

All of the following are correct:
I consider him my friend and mentor.
They consider this task quite difficult.
The government considers non-payment of income tax a crime.
The government considers it a crime to not pay income tax.

The preferred idiom is "consider X Y," where X is a noun (a pronoun is OK!) and Y is a noun or adjective. You just want to avoid "consider X to be Y" or "consider X as Y."

You were right to eliminate this for wordiness (and passive form). But the same wording was in (A), the choice you selected! :-)

RaviChandra wrote:
im unable to explain but here it doesn't require a reference

You are right, "it" is a dummy pronoun here and does not really refer to anything (except maybe the situation in general).

Some other examples:
It was a dark and stormy night when the ship set sail.
It may rain today.
It could be true that...

That every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants.

A)That every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants
B)Clean criminal records of their employees is important to investment banks; hence, a stringent background check are necessary prerequisites for employment
C)Because they consider it important that all of their employees have a clean criminal record, investment banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check
D)It is of some importance that all investment banks’ workers have clean criminal records which is why many of them undergo stringent background checks
E)The reason that investment banks require background checks of their applicants is because they require clean criminal records of their employees

This question is totally based on concision , redundancy and modifiers.

Doubt:
Clean criminal records of their employees is important to investment banks, hence, a stringent background .........

Does the 1st clause Clean ....., has a modifier issue because the pronoun their is used before investment bank in the same clause.
In general can we use the pronouns before their antecedents , as in option C.

Answer C

A)That every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants
It should be his or her

B)Clean criminal records of their employees is important to investment banks; hence, a stringent background check are necessary prerequisites for employment
is necessary

C)Because they consider it important that all of their employees have a clean criminal record, investment banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check

D)It is of some importance that all investment banks’ workers have clean criminal records which is why many of them undergo stringent background checks
It destroys the entire meaning. It means the employed workers are undergoing a background check instead of the applicants

E)The reason that investment banks require background checks of their applicants is because they require clean criminal records of their employees
redundant

Best is C

What does "IT" refer to in OPtion C?

Because they consider it important that all of their employees have a clean criminal record, investment banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check

Does IT refer to "That all of their employees have a clean criminal record"?...If so, use of IT & That clause immediately is redundant....Then how come this option is better than E?

Isnt the statement

"Because they consider That all of their employees have a clean criminal record important" better than Option C...

1] That every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants ---
-Which is why- is slang; grammatically it has no proper reference; it has no comma before, nor can it refer to banks, or for that matter even criminal record.

2]Clean criminal records of their employees is important to investment banks; hence, a stringent background check are necessary prerequisites for employment -- background check are necessary --- is plain S - V problem.

3]Because they consider it important that all of their employees have a clean criminal record, investment banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check--- Correct choice

4]It is of some importance that all investment banks’ workers have clean criminal records which is why many of them undergo stringent background checks--- 1. Which is why is wrong: 2. It says "many of them" and not "all of them" -- blatant distortion

5]The reason that investment banks require background checks of their applicants is because they require clean criminal records of their employees --- The reason—because - is redundant

daagh, is it okay to use the word 'that' at the beginning of the sentence ? As mentioned in option A. If yes, is there any conditions attached to its usage as such ?

Regards.

The basic rule is that every subject must have a working verb to make the sentence meaningful; else we may end up in fragments. Let’s consider the situation with and without ‘that’

Clause 1. That every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants

Clause 2. Every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants

Clause 1. ‘That every worker has a clean criminal record’ is a noun-phrase that acts as the subject of the clause and the verb is - is of – This is a correct construction.

Clause 2. ‘Every worker’ is the subject and its first verb is ‘has’; but the problem is the additional verb “is”. There is no subject for this verb and hence this clause is a fragment. Meaning also changes in that, now it looks as though every worker is of some importance rather than that every worker with a clean criminal record is of some importance.

These are different literary styles drawn from time old custom and I don’t know whether such usage is bound by any specific rule.

Hi
Well a very late response but the meaning in the answer choice E changes completely - "The reason that investment banks require background checks of their applicants is because they require clean criminal records of their employees" - What this conveys is - they require background checks because they require clean criminal records of their employees, rather the company requires employees with clean criminal records.
Don't whether it makes sense to you?

Actually, gulbaghs, those two constructions actually mean the same thing. If I require X of someone, that means I require the person to have X. There's no significant difference in meaning in that part of E.

As others have pointed out, the problem with E is "the reason is . . . because." We should either say "The reason for X is that Y" or "X is true because of Y." It doesn't make sense to combine the two. The reason itself is not because of anything.

I eliminated C because I thought "it" does not have a clear reference.
Can please someone help me and explain to me, to what "it" is referring?

Thank you.
Kind regards.
