Practice CATs - AWA every time? [#permalink] New post 26 Jun 2009, 18:00
The AWA is obviously less of a priority than the Quant/Verbal, but it also seems important to build up stamina and get used to writing for an hour before diving in to the real heart of the test.

Do you guys usually work the AWA every time, every once in a while, or just a few times closer to the actual test?

Most of the time the approach is something like this:
Month 1: Prepare for Math section
Do math CAT's only
Month 2: Prepare for Verbal section
Do verbal CAT's only
Month 3: Put it all together
Do full tests
Month 4: - Take GMAT

So, most only take full CAT's at the end of their prep. You can do it before, but I feel that's wasting a waste of cats.

You should definitely do it at least once. Like bb said, it's most effective toward the end of your prep, because at that point you'll be focusing on building stamina and reducing anxiety. In the early weeks you'll be anxious to benchmark your quant and verbal performance, so you'll want to see what your scores are in a best-case scenario (i.e. without wasting stamina on AWA).

The approach to the AWA is pretty formulaic, so it really doesn't require extensive practice. I'd suggest only doing the AWA on the last 1-3 practice CATs, but it certainly wouldn't hurt you to do it on all of them.

I took many full tests (like 20), I only did the AWA with two of them.
