There definitely is a correlation and I, sadly, can confirm this on my own. Before my first GMAT attempt in Dec '12, I had the exact same question and contacted many "720+ debriefers". In fact, almost all had an
OG12/OG13accuracy of 90%+ in all sections. Here I am talking just about the hit rate of their first completion of official questions. Personally, I had a success rate on OG questions about 80% (between 75% in PS and DS and approx. 90% in RC and CR) and ended up wth a score of 640. So I do think that you should try to work on your weak areas.
Provided you have already had an in-depth look at all mistaken/guessed questions, the very best approach for you here should be to take one official GMATPrep test. I think this will show you where exactly you stand in terms of Verbal and Quant. If you are already around V42, I would concentrate on Quant. A 82-84% hit rate on Quant could result in a Q45, which still offers a lot of improvement. You have to have in mind that a Q45 is somehow low in terms of its overall percentile rank.
But as I said - it is very important to first understand WHY you did the mistakes/guesses, find every possible way of solving the mistaken questions and of eliminating all wrong question answers!
