Pre MBA Background [#permalink] New post 19 Jan 2009, 14:47
Hey Everyone,

I wanted to gain an understanding of the Pre-MBA background. I've seen some figures of the admitted students and most have an industry background in Consulting, Finance or High Tech. For example here is the class profile for the Haas school of business:

http://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/community_02.html

What amazes me is the low percentage of admits from industries like Retail and Consumer Products which are probably some of the largest employers in America. Is this because a low percent of people apply from these industries or because schools are biased towards consulting and finance? I am assuming that the class profile is similar to other schools. Also, the reason why I bring this up is because my background is in both Retail and Consumer Products.

Sharmar - certainly the industries you mention are seen as traditional feeder industries into top MBA programs, so it's not surprising that there are many people with those background who go to these schools. However, a large portion of the class does not come from these industries (the exact percentages will vary by school).

What matters most is the experience you are getting at your job, rather than the industry in which you work. If you're getting project and leadership experience that will allow you to demonstrate to the adcom that you have the leadership and teamwork skills, and career progression/success that they are looking for, you will do ok.
