Hey everyone. Long time since I've perused this forum. I took the GMAT my first time last year and scored a 700. However, I'm motivated to try again for a better score and to bring up my quant percentage. I have a couple questions I'm hoping you guys can help me out with....

1. Will a higher GMAT score boost my "academic credentials" to put me in a better position for an academic scholarship an a top tier school?
2. Would taking a prep course, such as Princeton Review, be worth the money, seeing as though I am already familiar with the format of the test?

I feel confident I can do better than a 700 or I wouldn't be wasting my time retaking.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

If u scored a 700, taking a prep course is stupid since they train u to max out at a 700, it's not goign to improve your score. Why do you wanna retake the GMAT? a 700 is good, good enuf to put u in contention at a top 10 school. If you want to go to harvard take the GMAT, and hope for a 790, but taking it again is dumb.

I agree with Nikerun; taking a course after 700 is a waste.

I have a friend who has 760; good undergrad degree but average experience. He has been applying to top 20 and so far all dings; except Columbia - they put him on a waiting list.

I don't think going for 700+ is worth it unless you are absolutely determined.

If you do decide to do it, however. I woudl recommend that you order you score reports and send them to schools with 700 on them. Then take the test and see if you got more than that. In that case, send another copy with a higher score. This will help omit a screw up in case you walk out with a 660.

I agree with both posts. Unless your score is unbalanced or you're going for top 5 and you other credentials aren't solid, you don't really need to retake. However, if your quant is below 75% and you are targeting the top 5, I would retake.

But I don't think a prep course would help you. Just work on harder quant questions.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I have determined with your opinions that the prep course would not be worth the exhorbitant cost. I do feel that I should take it again as I am confident I can raise my score. Plus, I'm not going to be involved writing essay's until later this summer, so I have some time I can spare to study.

No one mentioned if they were aware of GMAT playing a large importance on academic scholarship decisions...

Some schools give good weight to GMAT in scholarship allocations. It just depends on schools - if they are hungry for scores, they will buy them. of the top 10/20, I know that Columbia is willing to pay for good 700's.
