Hey guys! I'm new to the forum here! I'm actually getting started at Stanford this fall, but my best friend is just getting started with GMAT Prep and wanted to get people's opinions on getting started with GMAT Prep in tutoring, versus a classroom setting. What do you guys recommend? I did private tutoring, but had some support from the parents. What are other's thoughts?

Have you taken a practice test yet? If not, I'd start there. If you are scoring very high (680+), or if you only need help on certain specific areas, it might make more sense to investigate self-study or private tutoring. However, if you need help on a pretty broad range of material, a course is very cost-effective. Of course, I will humbly recommend Manhattan GMAT for that.

Hey guys! I'm new to the forum here! Excited to be planning my MBA career in the next couple of years! Does anybody have a recommendation for GMAT prep in the NYC Area? I'm a little nervous about the expense of private tutoring, but don't know if classes are really worthwhile or not, since I am generally a pretty strong test-taker. If anybody has recommendations, let me know! Thanks!

I agree with Dmitry. Your starting point should not be course vs private tutoring. You should first try to figure out your current level. For that, get hold of the Official Guide 13th Ed and work on the Diagnostic. That itself will give you a good idea.

Some people instinctively get very high scores with a few weak areas. All they need to do is work on those few areas. There are multiple ways of doing that too - the appropriate approach would depend on their individual requirements (the areas they need to work on, how do they study best, how much time they have, how much effort they are willing to put on their own etc). Also, if they aim to score 750+, I usually recommend my blog: http://www.veritasprep.com/blog/categor ... er-wisdom/
I like to take intuitive approaches to high level concepts in my posts.

Some others find themselves in a situation where they need to work through the entire GMAT curriculum (though their basic Math and English concepts are fine). Again there are multiple options and what they choose depends on the factors mentioned above.

Still others might feel the need to go through some basic concepts before starting a GMAT course. For them, I would recommend their high school books and websites e.g. purplemath.com and khanacademy.org

Figure out where you are and what you need and then we will be able to come up with more relevant advice.
