New theories propose that catastrophic impacts of asteroids and comets may have caused reversals in the Earth's magnetic field, the onset of ice ages, ( splitting apart of continents) 80 million years ago, and great volcanic eruptions.

E) continents that were split apart .

B) the splitting apart of continents

Why is E wrong? Is it because the parallelism is disrupted because there is no noun- relative clause in the series??

Yeah... you have a list of nouns, so look for a noun.
