Profile Advice - 760 GMAT / Veteran / 2Years Retail Banking [#permalink] New post 15 Sep 2013, 08:37
Hi,

Just completed my GMAT and got a 760, Q49 V44 and am awaiting IR and AWA scores. Based on the strength of my score, several people have recommended that I apply to top US schools and I would really appreciate some insight regarding my application.

About me:

- 25 year old Asian male, Canadian citizenship
- B.Commerce from University of Toronto (GPA 2.44/4)

Work experience in chronological order:
- Various retail banking roles during undergrad, Cash Management Analyst working for large Canadian bank upon graduation. Stayed for 1 year (considered top talent in that role)
- Infantry Officer - Canadian Forces, top graduate of my training program but I left after a year for reasons that will be stated below
- Entrepreneurship - Started a made to measure menswear company that turned profitable after 3 months, been working on that this last year

I want to leverage an MBA to launch a career in management consulting or investment banking. I know I need to make up my mind soon about what stream I'm truly targeting but I wanted to ask someone if I stand a chance applying to top US schools or if I'm just wasting my time and money. The low undergrad GPA and early retirement from the military can be addressed in my essay, I had extenuating personal circumstances. '

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for any responses!

Hi there,

Congrats on the 760 GMAT, that is outstanding! Certainly that is a plus in your profile. Other strengths include the banking experience and definitely the start-up experience. Probably an Asian with Canadian citizenship will also garner more interest in terms of class diversity.

However you do have some weaknesses, as you know... the GPA being the biggest; good that you have an explanation that hopefully helps some. The other potential concern that could be raised is regarding your past experiences, 2 parts-- a) is he READY at this point for b-school vs waiting a few years? (note: average incoming student has 5 years experience), and b) there does seem to be a lot of job-career-experience changing in a short time, which can raise eyebrows/q's about commitment and certainty about your proposed goals.

So, overall it would be tough to provide much more feedback at this point; based simply on the info at hand, I'd say it wouldn't be easy to get into the top 5 schools due to those potential weaknesses. Not impossible, but not easy, even with 760. Outstanding, unique, compelling essays can help a lot, but it is a very competitive admissions environment at top schools. You'd probably have a shot, with strong essays, at schools outside the top 5-8 or so.

Good luck to you!
