Profile Eval and help in selecting MAJOR [#permalink] New post 18 Aug 2011, 01:23
Dear All,

I intend to join MBA from a good (Top 20) university but I am little confused about the major.

My brief profile is as under:-
1) Indian Male 27 Years
2) Engineering from one of the top 10 College in the country (GPA 3.64). Completed in 2007 in Electronics & Comm.
3) GMAT - 720 (Q-50/V-36)
4) Work Ex- 2 Years in Electronics Core company as Design Engineer
5) Then I was attracted to a new opportunity to extend my family business and add a new dimension to it. Completed 2 years.
The work required me to travel different places of India and contact with several customers. Our vendors include several overseas companies from Japan, Europe, Korea and China. So had a lot of interaction with the marketing people of these companies and understand their take on Indian market and make them understand about customers interaction. So have a mix of Indian and International exposure.

6) Extra Curricular activities - Active volunteer in college fest. Member of college and company volleyball team.
Work part time with NGO.

POST MBA

I want to do my own business (Either in the country from where I do MBA or back in India) but I have not yet decided the major as I still look for some more details:-
1) In the course of entrepreneurship - What actually we learn in these univ and how is this different from pure marketing or finance.
2) I also look to strengthen and build my network and level of communication wit TOP executives during my MBA.

3) In the courses of Finance or Marketing - Are they focused on pure finance or pure marketing as required in a job. I understand the clubs helps but isnt the main curriculum the most important.
4) FINANCE - If I decide to go for this, but I dont have workex, which I can relate to my interest in finance. How to build up this gap??

UNIVERSITIES

What are the main points I should look in the universities, I have not yet shortlisted any universities. Or what are the main questions I should answer from myself which will help me in deciding the major.
And it seems like I am running behind schedule (Is it so???)

I know this is a long and boring msg, but please help me to decide fast.

Thanks.

Hi timeishere,

Hope the following answers your question.

The study of entrepreneurship is very different than the study of marketing and finance. You may want to read this Wikipedia definition on finance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finance.

An MBA program will give you a strong foundation for marketing and for finance, which is very relevant if you pursue work in that industry. To build finance experience, I recommend looking for potential internship opportunities. This can be before you enter an MBA program, but it can also be during your summer internship at school. I recommend reaching out to your network and speaking to individuals in finance to learn more about the industry.

For universities, you should identify what your goals are. As an example, if you know you are interested in pursuing finance, than attending a university in the North East, particularly in New York, would be a great choice. First identify what you are looking for in a program, and then look for business schools that will help you reach your goals.

Hope this was of help.

Cheers,

Conrad and the Stacy Blackman Team

Hi Conrad,

Thanks for your reply. Can you also please elaborate about some of the methods these univ use in the entrepreneurship courses.
What I understand from some univ sites is that they have some clubs which let students interact with VC and let them do some project in their desired field, but there should be much more than that. As we need some formal and informal sort of training also.

I am not able to decide and hence not able to proceed further in the app process.

Hope I am moving in the right direction.

Thanks and await for your reply.
