Profile Eval-how does financial success affect funding? [#permalink] New post 26 Feb 2014, 06:37
I would appreciate any insight you could offer into my chances of getting in w/funding to some of my round 2 applications. And then if unsuccessful trying again next year will make a difference?

I am Hispanic male 28 (29 at matriculation), GRE 168/Q 165/V (760 equivalent) I had a 3.61 from a 2nd tier midwest public school (I finished HS at 16 and just ended up at the school in my area, but was hyper active/involved undergrad) and then went straight to HKS and SAIS on full ride. I worked professionally abroad in SA as well as in the public sector in midwest. Recently I am working as an entrepreneur and have seen a good deal of financial success.

My interests are in smaller programs Cornell, Tuck, Yale for Consortium, and then MIT/Stanford.

If it doesn't work out this year I am exploring trying again next year. Do you think financial success in my current work will limit my ability to secure funding? I have been unsure in essays and interviews how much to disclose.

Thank you in advance!

Many scholarships, including the Consortium fellowships, are based on merit (academic, professional and community leadership, etc) rather than need. I was offered the full-tuition Consortium fellowship to Tuck and a 50% scholarship to Yale, before submitting any financial info (I applied in Round 1).

If it doesn't work out this year, do you think trying again next year would make a difference? I would matriculate at 30 if I started fall 2015.

Without knowing your background, I don't think anyone could accurately answer that question (but I'll leave it to the admissions consultants).

Do you expect to have any significant changes in your profile next year? Or did you rush your applications this year, and plan to spend more time next? Why do you think it may not work out this year, and how would next year be different?

And if you are worried about your age, I don't think one year would make a huge difference, especially at schools like Tuck, which tend to trend older.

I wouldn't say they were rushed, but I feel I didn't speak as much to my current success out of fear that it would negatively affect my chances of seeking funding.

If by secure funding you mean federal loan programs, you have nothing to worry about. Just about anyone can secure student loans at attractive rates which don't require payments untiil after graduation. But I actually think based on your profile as a Hispanic identified applicant, you may be eligible for fellowships. I helped a Hispanic client this year gain acceptance into several top schools and in the end he was offered a full scholarship to a top 10 school. He did not have a score on the GMAT as high as yours either. Let us know if we can help you bring out your best application. We have specialists who graduated from the schools on your target list and have found our approach to be extremely effective for clients.
