Profile Eval Please! (Law Student 26 Male Looking at Top 10) [#permalink] New post 05 Oct 2009, 12:11
Hi! I am planning on applying to Stanford, HBS, UC Berkeley, & Booth. I take my GMAT in 8 days but I hope to make @ or near the 700+ mark. Please let me know if my profile will be competitive. Also, indicate if a higher GMAT Score would help in these schools

1/2 Caucasion, 1/2 Korean - (Military Kid: Born in Seoul [US Citizen] for 1 year, lived in TX for 5, Japan for 6, and AR for 14 years)
Undergrad: 3.3 BS in Computer Engineering @ University of Arkansas - Fayetteville
Graduate: JD 3.5 Top 10% of class @ UALR - Bowen School of Law
-Also: Studied in Paris France for a summer concentrating on international labor law and EU law

Work:
-Financial Advisor for 3 years.
-Worked at 6 top law firms in state of AR over the course of 3 years (our schools interviews for semester length terms of employment so the more you work is actually better)
-Founder of Tech Startup (ThanksBud, an online marketplace for buying and selling service)
--Company won Donald W. Reynolds Governor's Cup business plan competition
-Started a Company called, "Denim Addiction" where I sold designer jeans purchased overstock from Bloomingdales to soroity girls. Grew this company to over 4 employees, 2 cities, and $400k revenue in it's third year until my supplier cut me off. ;)

Career Goals:
-With my background in Computers and Finance, I would like to work in the VC industry or as an entrepreneur. That is the main reason that I am applying to B-school. My preference is San Francisco (as indicated by the Stanford/UCBerkeley choices) or the bay area. I want to attend B-school more for the connections, and, since I already have a JD, I do believe that, unless I get into a top 10 school, attending would not be in my best interests.

-Young Democrat
-Arkansas Bar Association
-Play Guitar & inter mural sports

To be blunt, Stanford and HBS will be long shots simply because they aren't too keen on those with JDs already - but if you still want to apply, go for it. Just treat them as lottery tickets (and no, there's nothing you can do to boost your chances other than a time machine and *not* doing a JD - practically speaking, just do the best you can in highlighting what you feel you bring to the table and hope that they bite).

Beyond that, UC Berkeley and Chicago you should be in range. But no matter which group of top schools you applying to, just be prepared for the possibility that you won't get in anywhere.

That is not what I expected. I'm left wondering why a JD is a deterrent for B-school. In all actuality, I am currently in my final year of law school. I could just drop out.. ;) I guess I can see how most lawyers would not be the best business leaders. Hopefully, my experience and heavily clad entrepreneurial history will overcome. I am not a stereotypical lawyer. The only task now, is getting that across to the Adcoms. Thanks a lot for the input.

ASIDE: I forgot to mention that I have been involved in raising capital ($50k-$1M+) for other companies. I have done this independant of my traditional work experience and mostly in the realm of real estate ventures and tech start-up companies. Should I mention this in my app or will this raise more questions than it is worth?

Thanks again. I appreciate the bluntness. I will surely frame my app accordingly and cross my fingers, pray, carry my rabbit foot, etc.

Sure, you can and probably should mention it.

In any case, it's not that they feel lawyers won't make good business people, but that there's enough young and hungry kids who the adcom would rather take.

Are you saying that all kids graduating from law school have had their youth and hunger sucked dry? Haha.. probably true.

I am definitely not the normal law student. Attending simply because I wanted to know more about the business end of my financial clients. The MBA schools in LR are terrible so I decided law would be best. Thanks again on the input.
