There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
Background: 30+ year old male from Pakistan looking for a part time MBA program in NY/NJ area.
GMAT score: 690 (Q:47 V:38 AWA: 3.5)
Undergrad: Bachelors in IT. 4-years degree. 84.8%
Experience: 9+ years of software design/development experience. Worked in an IT consulting company where i was promoted four times in four years. I had 5 direct reports when i left. Currently working in IT department of a major investment bank. I had three direct reports until about a year ago but the nature of my position changed because of offshoring. I do not have any direct report but current role involves interaction with a specific customer base of the application, issue resolution and software development.
Extra-curricular activities: Almost none, which is my weakest point (along with low AWA)
Goal: MBA with majors in Finance. Want to combine my strength in IT with gained knowledge in finance to take my career to the next level. Interested in mathematical models for financial management with special emphasis in Islamic investment.
Target school: NYU Langone
Is my profile good enough for NYU ? I don't think there are better alternatives in NY/NJ which concerns me. I am not interested in Executive MBA as my company will only sponsor a PT program.
Though your GMAT score is competitive for NYU's part-time program, your age and (especially) your lack of extracurriculars and fairly common profile could hold you back there. I agree with you that there aren't programs in the NYU/NJ area that are *better* but there are plenty of other programs that may give you decent placement opportunities locally, especially if you stand out from your classmates. For example, Baruch, Fordham, Pace, NJIT, Rutgers. Check out which firms recruit at these schools; you may be surprised.
Good luck, _________________
