Profile evaluated: GMAT 730 + GPA 2.89 [#permalink] New post 21 Dec 2012, 22:01
Hello,

Here is my profile:
Chinese Female, 27.
undergraduate from top univeristy in China, major in computer science with GPA 2.89.
5+ Working experience in leading companies of IT industry, software engineer with a few customer facing activities.

GMAT 730, V37 Q51 AWA 4
Toefl 103, S24,R24,L28,W27

Career goal: High-tech industry will be the first choice, ideally looking for product manager position, either in big companies or start-ups, leadership program in high tech also sounds good. Consulting will be an alternative choice, IT consulting should be realistic as I have ERP working experience, strategy and management consulting will be another choice.

I have applied Stanford/Columbia/UCLA in first round, got ding from Stanford and Columbia, no response from UCLA yet. I already planned to apply for Ross and Yale in 2nd round.

If I want to start the MBA study in 2013 fall, and am looking for some program with lower rank but fit for my goal and with some scholarship. Which programs should I apply for in the 2nd round? McDonough? Rice?

Thank you very much for the advice.

Cheers,
Jessie

Hi Jessie,

Based on your profile you must target some realistic b-schools in R-2 with good placement rate in consultancy like: Booth, Kellogg, Haas, Tuck, MIT-Sloan, NYU-Stern & Darden. Ross & Yale are also good options and should be within your reach. Subsequently, you should start working on your essays & interviews which constitute significant part (around 60%) in the entire application process. You can try your chances in b-schools by clicking http://www.general-ed.com/chances-of-bschool

This is where you can demonstrate your leadership skills, professional accomplishments & other aptitude. A well presented and perfectly written essay is noteworthy to make a strong case for yourself during the final interview. Even your scholarship chances become bright when you position well on these facet. So, would suggest you to focus on your essay writing part.

Kindly feel free to post any other doubts or concern you might have.

Cheers!!

Hi, Neha,

Thank you for the reply.

I don't think I will get chances in the schools you mentioned: Booth, Kellogg, Haas, Tuck, MIT-Sloan, NYU-Stern & Darden. :-)

So I will try my luck on Ross (Yale is a big stretch and not quite fit, but it has good international reputation), essays are already done for both schools, and now I am preparing for the worst case: if I cannot get offer from any of these schools, what I am going to do.

One option is anyway I will start my MBA in 2013 fall, so I will find another school which I should be quite competitive for. I understand it will be a school with lower rank, and I will not get good recruitment opportunities after graduation. So the job after graduation will be largely depending on what I am doing for now, and I am a SAP employee now. I think it is realistic to find a SAP consultant job in IT consulting firm, Deloitte, Accenture, etc... So I am looking for schools which will have IT consulting firms as top hiring companies and can offer me a considerably good scholarship.

I did some research these days, and it seems narrow down to Mcdonough and Rice. But the information I got was based on the internet. I don't know if there are other schools more fit to my goal, considering of scholarship, location, top hiring employers, reputation...etc. These schools don't have much difference in reputation if I go back to China.

Any advice is really appreciated. I need to prepare for the school soon to catch the R2 deadline.
